Bat. Girl.

Draw Batgirl. Jamie Dee Galey decided to draw Batgirl and post it on his livejournal site. And thus a meme was born. The list of LiveJournalers who have joined him keeps growing and growing. Many of them are pretty good!
I think the next twist is to have people make these into actual costumes and get pretty girls to wear them.
And then get them to fight crime.

So. Here it is. Now It has happened. It is 2006. From here on out the "Best of the web" will be culled from Livejournal, Xanga, and MySpace.
An epochal milestone, indeed.

sourwookie,
I think you may need to step away from the keyboard, take a deep breath, go outside (maybe), and, you know, get over it. I don't think we're quite there yet, but nice of you to work yourself into a healthy lather so the rest of us don't have to.
No running in the hall, kids!
I thought this was great.

yeah, seriously sourwookie, this is fascinating; dozens & dozens of people spontaneously forming a meme, a ton of different amateur artists all doing independent takes on the same semi-iconic character, it's really quite cool. take your jaded attitude elsewhere, mr "has posted no links".

The whole batgirl thing was pretty awesome as it is two of my friends that were among the first three people to do it. I was like, those are some neat batgirls. Oh dear, here come some more and some more and some more.
I think after today, no one is able to come up with an original batgirl outfit at all.

Some are pretty hot. Now if only we could harness the collective giddy energy of LiveJournal and sell it to some teenage market research company. Direct that energy. Profit. Buy island. Retire to bitch full-time on MeFi. Its really quite simple.

It doesn't surprise me one bit. There's a reason why so many good artists are on LJ, and why so many of them have an interest in comics, besides sheer numbers.
In its early days, I / LJ actively sought out individuals who wanted to do webcomics, and invited them to join the site. The goal was essentially to use syndication -- first LJ's basic "friends" syndication and then RSS, when it was added -- to bring webcomics to whoever might want them on the internet, and ideally to create an audience for them. In turn, I hoped that their fans and friends would join them, use the site, and maybe become members. Many did.
We set up an official LJ community for them, infact, and gave them all the assistance they needed to get started. Many are still around, and many more have followed. It's worth noting that most of LJ's top RSS feeds and widest read journals are still of comic strips.

Some good stuff, although girl-bat is my favorite. Not for artistic "talent" but for taking such a different direction. Got a little overloaded looking through them all...
Would be interested in seeing such excitement in an artmeme based on original characters.

I spotted (published comic book artist) Andi Watson in the list (she's at the top, actually), so perhaps they aren't all amateurs ;)
And what insomnia_lj said seems to be true-- I've noticed that there's a lot of good artists on LJ (some pro, but many amateur).

And how many were blonde?
Suck it, Schumacher and Silverstone.
regarding the content: jeez, skill is only for the dedicated, I suppose. Bragging "this is a 10 minute sketch" isn't an endorsment.

Is it any wonder? Stan Lee and the SciFi Channel want to give people just that opportunity with their upcoming low-concept 'reality' television bid for 2006, 'Who Wants to be a Superhero?'.
Let's just hope that it goes the way of 'The Dream Team'...

Yes, let's add some value to the discussion by highlighting the hot ones... like in that movie, Slap Shot. (One hockey player's wife gives him a book as he gets on the team bus for a road series. She's bookmarked the fuck scenes.)

The funny thing is not one of these batgirls looks like they could kick my ass. Face it, a realistic bat girl would have to have a stocky, muscular build, not fuckable mile-wide hips.
