I bet he was a hotter woman than Divine Brown...

He would have been okay in New Zealand, where prostitution is legal. But when James Bond director Lee Tamahori dressed up in women's clothes, and approached an undercover Hollywood police officer with an offer of oral sex, he was arrested and charged with soliciting an act of prostitution and loitering with the intent to commit prostitution. Hugh Grant's career didn't seem too badly affected by his indiscretions with Divine Brown, but some might argue they were more palatable to the general public. (Other Tamahori films include, xXx: State of the Union and New Zealand movie Once Were Warriors.)

As you suggested in your setup, the fallout back home may not be too dire. (In addition to legal prostitution, NZ numbers among its MPs the Honorable Georgina Beyer, MTF transsexual, Maori, and former sex worker.)

More to the point is how straitlaced Hollywood will react. Of course, the fact that "XXX" was less than a hit offers a convenient excuse if Tamahori suddenly finds work hard to come by.

once were warriors is an outstanding film. the others mentioned? not so much.

my opinion of legal issues involving hollywood talent depends entirely on my opinion of their work.

Once Were Warriors and The Edge were excellent. The rest of his career's been stinky.

We can only hope this doesn't prevent Tamahori from making more movies. Anyone know what Uwe Boll's predilictions are?

He offered to give the undercover cop oral sex and money? His only crime is overgenerosity.

In other prostitution-related news, the estate of Philip K. Dick seems to have retained Tamahori to direct the latest crappy action movie adaptation of a PKD short story.

I also give recommend 'Once Were Warriors'. But XXX state of the union means he deserves to be arrested.

That's a relief. I thought the article was suggesting that he was dressed up as a woman and trying to charge for blowjobs.

I daresay there's a market for wrinkly fetishists, but I wouldn't expect to find it on a regular Hollywood 'ho stroll.

Yeah, the couple of people I've spoken about it with haven't been revolted or anything, just kind of surprised. More a sense of disbelief than disgust.

I guess everyone has their kinks. I'm sure I have a kink or two, but I'm glad none of my kinks compell me to dress in women's clothes and go out prospecting for cocks on the street. Sounds like a tough way to get off.

I'm picturing Yukon Cornelius.

[lick lick lick] "Nothin'!"

Holy shit, he went from Once Were Warriors to xXx State of the Union, wow. His film career trajectory freaks me out way more than his dressing up like a woman and soliciting a cop does!

The plot outline strongly suggests they've entirely missed the point of that PKD short story (The Golden Man).

As a New Zealander (fan of "Warriors") and a former entertainment journalist who also wrote the long remaindered "Hugh Grant: the Unofficial Biography", published after Grant's Hollywood sex scandal, my opinion is...

Actually, I don't have one.

Just couldn't resist mentioning my daft (but genuine) credentials in this matter:)

Wow, I thought Once Were Warriors was an overrated pile of shit.

Didn't Hollywood just give a lifetime achievement award to a director who is in exile because he raped a child? They can't be all that concerned about this.

I knew the new James Bond movie was gonna suck.

He said suck....huuurrhuurr.

Die another day was 2 films: for the first half, they guy deserved a blowjob, and a dang good one too.

As soon as the invisible car turned up, it became a videogame. Based on the horrible things that he did in the second half of that film, I think the cop should have applied some molar justice, and piggie should've had some sausage for dinner.

Seconding the idea that Once Were Warriors is an overrated pile of shit. It's essentially an After School Special with the graphic brutality knob cranked to eleven.

jacquilynne, I'm going to nitpick. If you're talking about Roman Polanski, then IIRC it's actually statutory rape, which is consentual, but between a legal age man or woman and a minor.

this doesn't make it okay, of course.
posted by shmegegge at 11:01 AM on February 3, 2006

I'm not an expert, but I'm under the impression he pled down to statuatory rape from much, much more serious charges, including supplying her with drugs or drugging her and the reason he eventually fled the country was that the judge was going to toss the plea bargain. So while I guess what really happened lies somewhere in the middle of the spectrum of rape charges, it's not quite 'high school sweethearts' in love, either.

More here.

From the article:

Prosecution spokesman Frank Mateljan said Tamahori was dressed in a black wig and off-the-shoulder dress when he approached an undercover police officer in Hollywood on January 8 and offered to perform sex for money.

...

If convicted, it is possible that as a foreign national Tamahori could lose his ability to work in the United States. Nobody at his gated home in Santa Monica responded to a request for comment by a Weekend Herald reporter last night.

...

A woman who answered the phone at Flying Fish [the NZ film production company Tamahori directs] last night said, "We have no comment", before hanging up.

So, uh, yeah. He's also procured the services of Michael Jackson's defence lawyer, so we'll see how things work out.
