you know what creeps me out about that? The pixelization just before the loop restarts. I started staring at individual pixels so hard that my brain popped.

Yeah, I hear that. Happened to me back about '93 or so, but with Fractint set to colorcycle one of the aptly-named "headache" high contrast maps and a 386 DX 40. Haven't been the same ever since.
Except I can't really remember if it was my brain that popped or the balloon, but no matter, both were nearly empty anyway.
