Neverland Amerika. "I don't know if I'm comfortable saying there's some great theory behind the pictures ..."

Owes something of a debt to Ralph Eugene Meatyard IMO.

Great pics, but I feel like the Flickr interface sort of cheapens them.

Kind of a wee bit like a live human take on Art Spiegelman's Maus (without the subtlety and general wondrousness).

(I know what you mean about them being hosted on Flickr, too, crunchland - the association with endless pictures of my friends'g cats/babies/etc. is hard to shake off.)

I kind of like the effect of seeing these on Flickr, something about the presentation enhances the whole the banality of evil deal he's got going. I'd even go so far as to say that it saves the project. Aesthetically the masks function a bit like Hamburger Helper, adding a flavor of Orwellian Nightmarishness without any effort on the part of the photographer. The other tropes, Up-Side-Down US Flag, Spelling America with a K, The Harsh Arc Light and Neverland are similarly easy choices that attempt to imbue a sense of frisson in to what would other wise be some Pretty Pictures of a Barn in Winter. Definitely heavy handed student work, but he's got skills. Given time, if he gets all of the tired-for-thirty-years cliches out of his system, he might produce some compelling work .
