Jet-Powered VW Beetle

The Beetle was chosen because it looks cool with the jet and it shows it off well. [link via Make Blog (with photos)]
It apparently shows off well anywhere but PhotoBucket. I only saw two pictures at Make.

Wow. Can that thing really be street legal?

We've all seen clear-cut examples of automotive sublimation (menopausal dudes in 'Vettes, for example), but why would you want your Bug to look like it had been buggered?!

Unlike Monster Garage's Celica JetCar, the rear bumper of the Beetle's less likely to ignite.

If this is legal, it's ok for me to mount a flamethrower on a car as well, right?

There's two types of legal - legal because something shouldn't be disallowed, and legal because nobody should be stupid enough to think it up so the law doesn't bother. This is definitely the second category. 'Course, in my State there are catch-all laws just to cover the reall idiots.

No story about cars powered by external combustion engines would be complete without this classic link.

You'll never hear someone tell a story about a guy in a rocket-powered K-car or a Volkswagen Beetle. It has to be a car that deserves to have a rocket attached to it. From the above link.

Finally, someone has attached an obscenely overpowered jet engine to a mundane vehicle and included an afterburner! All over the net there are sites put up by people who've attached jet engines to scooters, skateboards, go-carts, etc., with no afterburners. Which is just stupid. I mean, what the hell is the point of strapping a gratuitous jet engine onto some arbitrary and unlikely mode of transportation if it isn't going to spew gouts of flaming death in its wake? Come on, people.

This makes me weep for the lost creativity and effort. (And for the children.)

What a monstrosity. And that's just my opinion of the new Beetle before its had the jet engine fitted. I vaguely recall reading about something similar being done to a Type 2. That'd be a white-knuckler.
On a related note, that urban myth from the Darwin Awards, about the car embedded in a cliff, could now actually become a reality.

As a New Beetle owner and enthusiast, and a guy who likes anal sex in all its infinite variety, I find this very appealing.

So the intake for the jet engine is inside the car? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
