I love product placement. It's so bad.

I've been waiting for this for years.

Motorama was a better "running away from home" film.

That last link was great, and then it showed me the what must be the highlight of the movie. I'm pretty unlikely to rent it now.

I remember seeing this moviein the theatres and using the mini-Nintendo Power that came with my ticket to beat Mega Man II.

Good times, good times.

In super mario bros. 3 you don't get more points for being at a higher level. The get the most points would be go to world 1-2 with a leaf and then go to the pipe that generates goombas and jump on them without touching the ground until you get 5000 points and then touch the ground (because after 5000 points you'd just get extra lives.) Then keep repeating that. You'd end up with a lot more points than that shit head Jimmy.

But playing mario 3 for high-score is really misguided. That's not the point of the game at all. It's like deciding the wrestling champ by who's oldest.

From wikipedia: Jenny Lewis (who played one of the main characters, Haley) is currently the lead singer of Rilo Kiley.

From the wikipedia link: "During the scene where Sam is playing Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, he proclaims that he's reached the sixth palace of Hyrule. The combination of the background music and sound effects, however, make it clear that he's in the North Palace, which is where the game begins."

NEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRDS...

Man, I'm excited for this. I know it can't possibly live up to my memories of it, but this movie was just awesome. Best promo for a game EVER.

The White Hat: Yep, and the guitarist played the character Ronnie on the Nickelodeon sitcom Salute Your Shorts.

I loved this movie. It made me want to get a power glove, and SMB 3... but then I realized that the power glove was a piece of shit. At least a friend bought it, and not me. :)

Didn't salute your shorts jump the shark when Ronnie arrived?

Anyways, now I've got to go find a Rilo Kiley CD and check it out.

Wow. I have no memory of this movie at all. Then again I was already well out of college when it came out.

What do you flag a post like this as? Noise, breaking the guidelines, what? This place needs a pepsi blue or a consumerism flag.

Are you impugning Super Mario Bros. 3? I have a legion of nerds at my disposal prepared to teach you a lesson to the contrary.

I watched this movie for free by hanging out in a cemetery behind the drive-in and tuning in with a portable radio. Even free it was a rip-off.

I'm sorry, but it had to be done:

What's with Lucas's jacket? Is he a member of Cobra Kai or something?

Yes, the movie is questionable but dissing SM3 is crossing the line, buddy!

caddis : "The game it is based upon sucks"

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I don't think so. I think it's fair to say that the movie has kitsch value, but beyond that completely SUCKS. But you can't dis Super Mario 3. It's bigger than Jesus.

The powerglove was a nintendo controller hot-glued to the back of a Michael Jackson glove. Moving your fingers would do nothing. And you couldn't press the buttons with your gloved hand because as I said it was attached to the back of the glove. It's likely to be the stupidest invention ever.

I'm waiting for the trailer mashup for this movie. Coming soon to a YouTube page near me.

It did look pretty pimp in the Nintendo Power ads.

Practically like being a cyborg!

Product placement?! Isn't that usually on the subtle side? This movie was nothing but a giant commercial for NES. And here's something: in the scene where Lucas Barton and his "goons" are standing at the top of the steps after they exit the "video armageddon", one of them might look familiar 'cause he's a young, strapping Tobey Maguire.

I wonder if Fred Savage ever puts on the Power Glove and a crown and struts around like a standard bearer at the start of a parade saying "I am the wiz! I am the wiz!"
posted by Astro Zombie at 3:43 PM on May 24, 2006

Alexandros: thanks so much for that link; you made my day. Notice that when Lucas punches buttons on the glove the first time it's the same melody from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. : )

To be fair, most Americans were visiting the mid-west in colour coded clothes and chanting Mario at the time. So they were just giving people want they wanted.

Oddly, the movie did not feature the U-Force.

Wow, I'm floored by the Jenny Lewis thing. Had no idea.

A childhood crush (Even breastless, she was HAWT in my 10 year old eyes) dovetailing with an modern day alt/retro/country music crush (Her new album's pretty good - I find Rilo Kiley a bit twee, tho) to make one super-charged, nostalgia-laced ÜBERKRÜSHEN!!!
