"Nothing in any of the manuals ever described anything like this," the 62-year-old Cross Lanes resident said. But the advice given 25 years earlier from his flight instructor immediately came to mind: "No matter what happens, fly the plane."
Is it too late to work that line into the movie script?

Hilarious post, analogue.
Interesting that the American black snake is also called a pilot black snake.

He was flying one-handed with Blacksnake on the plane? No wonder he didn't want his wife on board!

What a moron. Doing nothing would have been the best course of action, not flailing around like a little girl.

Sure, unless it were of a venomous persuasion.

Black snakes, at whatever size, are the gerbils of the snake world.

Blacksnake is a name that has fallen out of usage since common names of North American snakes were standardized more than half a century ago, because it could mean one of two very different species -- either the black racer (Coluber c. constrictor), a non-constricting, fast, terrestrial snake that bites first and asks questions later, or the black rat snake (Elaphe o. obsoleta), a larger, arboreal constrictor that is generally calmer, especially when full grown (it maxes out at 8½ feet, and is one of the largest snakes in the U.S.). "Pilot blacksnake" generally meant the black rat snake, whereas "blacksnake" usually meant the racer, I think. You can imagine the confusion. Both are found in West Virginia, I believe.
For the life of me, I can't tell which was on the plane: a black rat snake wouldn't have been much to worry about (even wild ones are relatively placid when fully grown, and this species is widely kept as a pet; I myself have a few of the other subspecies); a racer would have been . . . exciting. Both, of course, are totally harmless, but that doesn't stop people from getting all melodramatic about it.
