In Chile, there is a diffferent anniversary.

Not only should we spare a thought to the thousands of ordinary New Yorkers who died needlessly in a day of madness, we should also spare a thought to the thousands of Chileans that perished in Chile under the Pinochet regime...33 years ago, Salvador Allende Gossens, the very first democratically elected socialist head of state in the western hemisphere, was overthrown by the Chilean armed forces, led by Augusto Ugarte Pinochet with CIA support.

Stuff like this makes it hilarious when people ask "Why do they hate us?".

Ah yes, a day to remember when we gave our unilateral support to fascism.

33 years ago. 33 YEARS AGO. And even after all that time, we still have (violent) protests about it every September 11.
One of the things that I remember thinking after the World Trade Center attack was that for the first time in ages the local news weren't about how much damage the protests, related to the Chilean coup of 1973, had caused.

.....Chile had a long tradition of democratic civilian rule; military intervention in politics had been rare. Some political scientists have ascribed the relative bloodiness of the coup and resultant repression to the stability of the existing democratic system, which required extreme action to overturn.
Contrast with: America is good, pro-democracy, a force for freedom, not a warlike people, they hate us for our freedom, we're the good guys, etc. etc.

So they changed they're flag because it looked like Holland's flag. But they changed it to something that looks like the Texas flag. I guess that's something.

part of the tradegy of 9/11 is that in other parts of the world the murder of many thousands of other innocent people was mostly invisible to most Americans. Chile was not invisible but people ignored the ruthlessness that our government was complcit in.

Actually, according to wikipedia, the Texas flag was created 21 years after the chilean one. I had no idea. :o

What about the Miracle of Chile? You know, where we converted everything to profit for American corporations and temporarily increased the GDP, while driving the poor into greater and greater devastation and hardship, and eventually ruined the economy. People actually have the gall to refer to it as a miracle.
