In Britain during the blitz, some kids were issued special gas masks (called Mickey Mouse) to keep them from getting too freaked out.

Those Heavy Rubber models look far more recreational though!

Very cool. Was anyone else struck by how well France and Italy were represented? Is it just that they have such a wide variety or that this collector tends to favor them?

I have a really nifty soviet ones (not entirely unlike this one). It makes for a great Halloween costume when combined with a black hood and long black coat. Very post-industrial Grim Reaper like.

In my secret heart of hearts, I've always wanted one of these, but since I don't handle toxic material (dog poop not counting) I can't justify the cost.

[Brass goggles and now gas masks? MeFi is airing out all my fetishes today.]

I've always found gas masks to be disturbing. When worn I mean. Especially the ones with the canisters on the front.

Definitely kinkwear for the well-heeled. Check the main Studio Gum site.

Whenever I see gasmasks now, I'm always reminded of the end of Gods and Monsters.

Interesting link.

quin I also have one of those old Soviet gas masks, complete with (musty) canister, which I bought in a weird German discount store in the early '90s. It clearly had "fallen from a Red Army truck"...sort of makes me wonder what other Soviet military equipment found its way to the market in the same way...
