Does he think gamers should get out and kill real people? Anyway isn't the high tech army of the future going to be a bunch of dudes controlling robots anyway?

I think homeboy's just pissed that there's no loofah attachment with rumble for the PS3.

I mean, seriously, as pampered and bloated a corporate media teat-sucker as O'reilly, complaining about the uninformed, and people lacking marketable skills?

If the mouth breathers of the world didn't love to listen to bloviaters like Billyboy tell them what to think, day in and day out, O'Reilly wouldn't have the marketable skills to get a gig beyond ditch digger. The man is not just ignorant, he's beyond ignorant. He's like antimatter to thoughtful discourse. A black hole from which no intelligent thought ever escapes.

His very continued existence drops the combined global IQ by significant figures.

Yeah. It's been going on for decades. They're called Televisions.

Bill's excuse? He's actually involved in manufacturing the perceptions to be delivered via machine. As far as I can tell, the only question is if he's just a pusher or an addict too.

A Pat Robertson homily on how we should show respect for all faiths? Advice from Mel Gibson about how to maintain one's decorum while being arrested? A book by Michael Richards on handling hecklers during a live performance?

I could go on, but I think I've made my point.

They don’t know what day it is

Of course I do; I keep my to-do list and calendar online, and my computer serves as my alarm clock (a different song at a different time every day of the week -- now that's handy).

they don’t know what temperature it is

Of course I do; I bookmarked my zip code at the Weather Channel's website (you should have seen me desperately trying to find the Weather Channel's actual TV channel when I'd just moved in and the internet wasn't set up yet). And if you're my mom, you've installed WeatherBug.

they don’t know what their neighbor looks like

Of course I do; I facebooked him and learned within seconds that we both like the same movies.

they don’t know anything

And I can research anything immediately, and get a chance to use my critical-thinking skills while I'm at it. My grandmother's been dithering around for weeks asking different guys at the pet store how to care for her new betta; I showed up, looked at Wikipedia, and answered her question (and learned a bunch of interesting new facts) within a minute.

Oh, wait -- I think I got confused. Which stereotype am I being today?

Ignoring the rest of the expected idiocy in the article, I always find it somewhat annoying when people are incapable of differentiating between psychological and physical dependencies.

did you ever talk to these computer geeks? I mean, can you carry on a conversation with them?

Yes. Yes I can Bill. And the fact that you can't says more about you than it does about me. Because I can talk with people who have backgrounds in something I might not understand. The main reason for this? I am curious about finding out things that I currently have no education in. I have an open mind. That is how people grow.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here in the form of a few personal anecdotes:

1. My dad, 63, played Everquest back when it was popular. He had a full-time job, but still managed to average 6 hours per day of game time his first year. He plays more, nowadays, and freely admits that's blatant escapism. That's a problem.

2. A friend of mine, mid-20s, did the same with another MMORPG for years, basically ignoring his wife and letting his marriage slide into disrepair. Then he had an affair, and she kicked him out. That's a problem.

3. My drummer, early 20s, refuses to get a job, cuz he's too busy playing Halo, Oblivion, and now, Gears of War. He is the prime target of ORLY's rant and fits his stereotype quite well -- no job, no skills, no motivation, happy just playin video games all the time and moochin off whomever will let him. Yeah, that's a problem.

In my mind, however, the real problem is people being LAME. Would it be any better if my dad drank to escape? If my friend were obsessed with porn? If my drummer was a wake-n-bake-everyday stoner?

Everything in moderation. Videogames can be mindless, but some mindlessness is probably a good thing. Heck, I wish I had more time to play some of the great games out there; I truly miss it. Sure, a good physical hobby -- jogging, swimming, basketball, etc. -- is better for you, but sometimes ya just need to do nothing... NU-THING useful. And whether that's drinkin, tokin, watchin tee vee, or playin videogames, I don't see why it much matters.

Just don't be lame.

LordSludge writes "2. A friend of mine, mid-20s, did the same with another MMORPG for years, basically ignoring his wife and letting his marriage slide into disrepair. Then he had an affair, and she kicked him out. That's a problem."

He should have learned that you can either concentrate on the game OR on having an affair, but not both!
posted by clevershark at 8:06 AM on November 22, 2006

LordSludge, I don't think anyone is arguing that video game addiction isn't real or that it's a good thing, but not everyone who plays video games for fun is addicted (in fact, I would tend to think most are *not* addicted). It's not the videogames' fault that people with addictive personalities get hooked.

Bill O'Reilly is a tool, that is for sure, but the only reason this crap depresses me so much is that my retiree dad listens to this idiot's tirades and then spouts them off in conversations as if it's gospel.

So, I'm pissed because I know what's going to happen now. Now I am going to have to explain to my dad (once again) that my iPod is not evil and that my husband is not a video game addict recluse because he has a few game consoles. The conversation is going to be long, stupid, and frustrating, and waste an hour of my life that I won't be able to get back.

Thanks a lot, Bill. Leave my impressionable parents alone!

Yeah... what's with this absolutist mentality? "If everybody is addicted to videogames, it'll destroy our country, therefore videogames are bad." == "If everybody is gay, the human population will die out, therefore homosexuality is bad." == "If everybody is a stoner, nobody will ever get anything done, therefore pot is bad."

How about: "If everybody is a talk-show host tool, then the world will collapse under its own toolitry, therefore talk-show hosts are bad..."

In my mind, however, the real problem is people being LAME.
