Please don't feed LSD to your cat.

This post was deleted for the following reason: people really, really don't like this, the video is pretty boring/awful/unfunny. Not a lot of upside to this, it's just short of animal cruelty on video.

i wonder what happens when you give sedatives to lab technicians ... and drive them down to the zoo and sneak them into the lion cage to wake up in the middle of hungry lions

WARNING: this is NOT a cute kitty video.

Do NOT watch this video if you're a cat lover; it features an animal in distress and can be extremely disturbing.

I have two things to say about this:

1.) My trips (averaged twice a week from age 17 to age 20, or thereabouts) were always better than that cat's trips.
2.) That was an excellent cover of Inna Gadda Da Vida.

Wow, that's worse than that video of a dog after smoking pot, though this video is with scientists and stuff and the latter was some young punks.

Poor kitty :(

Just for the record, I am not endorsing the administration of psychoactive / psychedellic drugs to animals, young children, or any others who cannot give their informed consent.

Hilarious!

I just wish there was more video of tripping animals, especially goats on acid: In their study of goats on LSD, Werner P. Koella, Roger F. Beaulieu, and John R. Bergen found that drugged goats walk in predictable geometric patterns, including squares, figure-L's, and figure-8's.

Not sure I'd want to see the death throes of poor Tusko the tripping elephant, though.

And, especially for those upset by photogenic animals getting twatted: high spiders spin rubbish webs.

What in the hell? Did they debone that cat? Are they experimenting with microgravity on an airplane? I'm pretty sure they accidently dosed that cat with Valium or Quaaludes or something - and if not I would like to suggest that you're not supposed to marinate your test animals in LSD like some sort of unhinged Godflesh BBQ.

I would hope that acid freaking on the kitty would elicit more chasing invisible self-transforming Faberge egg machine elves and less Oh shit where's the fucking floor!!

And what is up with that cover of Inna Gadda Da Vida and it's awesomeness? And why was that guy talking about Pynchon and subcultures? Where can I see the rest of this movie or subscribe to a newsletter?

Pathetic. Cruel. Awful.
posted by dropkick at 5:11 AM on December 2, 2006

Please don't give your elephant LSD either.

I'll bet these "scientists" made the same kind of gross error in dosage as the CIA morons did when they injected poor Tusko with 297mg (milligrams, not micrograms) of pure liquid acid.

My cat used to trip out on catnip all the time. He loved it. He destroyed all the catnip on our street. The psychadelic properties of catnip are somewhat less potent than those of LSD, I imagine.

I apologize to those disturbed, I thought the title made the nature of the link quite clear.

For those who were unhappy about the LSD science test subject: crow and cat become friends. It will warm your heart.
posted by Meatbomb at 5:20 AM on December 2, 2006

Yeah, the thing is, cats are already tripping all the time, so there's no need to give them actual hallucinogens.

One time back in the acid-pushin' days someone I know dosed out about 6 hits out onto some cookies, then left the room for a second, and his smallish dog ate the cookies. Reportedly the dog bounced around sniffing at all sorts of things that weren't there, ate an entire bag of dog food, and went to sleep. It was fine the next day.

animal losing it's shit, great.
it didn't help that I had a tabby myself, but my instinct was to hunt this guy's kids down (him being too old, and what would be worse?). Then there's that frame at the end, and I realized his chances of procreation are scant.

and what the hell does this have to do with aeronautics?
posted by Busithoth at 5:51 AM on December 2, 2006

and what the hell does this have to do with aeronautics?

What the hell does this clip have to do with anything?

Perhaps it's part of a well thought out, well controlled, and effective research project exploring drug effects on the brain. That would certainly be of interest to an aeronautics institute, or perhaps they just had the facilities. I support animal experimentation for some research projects, this might fall into a category I support or one I would actively work to end. However I have no background information on the test, the researchers or the goals. All I have is a single short clip taken out of context, probably in order to elicit the same response seen in this thread.

Then again it could be a half assed research project carried out by assholes, or worse and uncontrolled unneeded project carried out by horrible people.

Without the context this clip means nothing.

Guess now wouldn't be a good time to tell you that container the cat was placed in was an early prototype microwave oven.

I'd also probably start vibrating like a cell phone on silent mode, if some one gave me way to much LSD and stuck me in a cardboard washing machine. This was too disturbing.

Any thought of what that cat was thinking??

I've wanted to see a "where are they now" followup on the toddler who ate several hundred candy colored acid tabs his uncle left lying around. Went into a coma-like state for a few days and gradually pulled out of it as I recall.

When you do drug tests, I thought you were supposed to introduce the LSD into the animal's bloodstream, not replace the animal's blood with LSD entirely.

The awesome cover of In A Gadda Da Vida is from The Residents' Third Reich and Roll. It's about 13:10 into the B-side of the LP, "Hitler Was a Vegetarian".

This video is horrible. It's weird that someone would recontextualize this footage and create a fake 49 year old documentary.

psmealey : "This post is fucking bullshit. Who's life is now better for having clicked on the link?"

Mine. I've occasionally been curious about what would happen to people/animals with extraordinarily large doses of LSD. Now I know.

Was my curiosity great enough that I'm happy the experiment was done? No, of course not. But the experiment was done years ago; it is a fait accompli. Was my curiosity great enough that I'm happy someone linked to the video? Yes.

Not saying it should be for anyone else, or that this is a great post, or anything like that. Just trying to answer your question as it pertains to me.
