Ha! He acts like Flickr has come round to his house, physically ripped his photographs into little bits, and then punched him in the face.
OMG YOU ARE VANDALISING MY PHOTOGRAPHY HOW DARE YOU TRY AND INJECT CHRISTMAS CHEER INTO MY LIFE ARRRGG

Oh man... the people that are complaining about it are hilarious. "It ruins my pictures! Gasp! Flickr is supposed to be a serious photography site! The world is ending!"
First of all, if you don't want people to do it to your photos, go into the Flickr account settings and set it so that nobody can add notes to your photos. It's not hard. It takes about 10 seconds. Second of all, Flickr isn't really a serious photography site. Not the way that DeviantArt, PhotoSig, PBase and others are. Yeesh.

Ok, usually I'm all for good cheer and fun, but this seems iffy to me. If the egg had been an option for picture posters only, it would be fun, but giving random people the option to change your pictures seems weird to me. If you want a nice feature, make it pleasant to use, dont make it at other people's expense. I am full of Christmas cheer FWIW, but this seems borderline.

The only people that can "change" (it takes 1 second to remove the hat or beard, incidentally, all you have to do is delete the note) your photos are those that have permission to put notes on your photos in the first place. If you don't want people putting hats or beards on your photos, just turn off notes. It's *really* not a big deal.

People are acting like these hats and beards are irreversibly added to the actual jpg and the original photo is therefore forever altered. You can, however, delete the notes as mentioned above, and any other view of the photo (e.g. clicking the "All sizes" button) shows it sans notes and Christmas decorations. Plus, I expect the hats and beards will all disappear at the end of December (or thereabouts) anyway.

"OMG, you are vandalizing my photography how dare you try and inject Christmas cheer into my life arrrgg"

@ antifuse.
Not quite true, it is a bigger deal. Anyone belonging to a group you have posted a photo to can add a note. So while you can turn notes off from your contacts etc, you cannot stop people from adding these to group photos.
So I can and did turn off notes for all my contacts today but I would have to remove hundreds of photos from hundreds of groups to stop my photos from having it added.
Some hot tempers but I fall on the side of what wheelieman said originally. There are some very good points in the thread about people feeling betrayed and feeling this is contrary to Flickr's TOS, copyright and CC lines.
There is quite a good discussion buried in there.

davebushe: I'm sure it's a great discussion and all, but it's a tempest in a teapot. Visit my photostream, I might be fixedgear on flickr as well, and vandalize at will. When it's 1/1/07 and they disappear, get back to me.

Bleah - Flickr's not even loading now. Either they decided to deal with the freak-outers by doing some emergency programming changes to take the hats away, or some Santa-hater is performing a DOS on them.

Hrmm, neat, I didn't know that. Having said that, it still takes about 2 seconds to delete a note if you want to be a grinch. And I really doubt that anybody is getting thousands and thousands of beards/hats put onto their photos (except for maybe that guy that complained up above... I bet he got a LOT of hats and beards after he complained).
