That's pretty much any Pentecostal church in the south, or at least any my grandmother took me to. Nothing quite scares a kid away from Jesus as seeing this in person without any warning.

Was raised in north Alabama, I saw this shit all the time. There were two prominent Pentecostal churches that did the dancing. It used to freak me the fuck out...still does. This you tube clip brings back scary memories.

This could have been an interesting post about some of the more esoteric/whacked out Christian faith practices like speaking in tongues, but you went for lowest common denominator LOLXTIANS single-link youtubefilter.

Before this gets deleted, which it will, can someone explain to me what is going on in the original video and why?

anifinder, I think the OP was less trying to make a point about esoteric Christian faith practices and more showing us a video he found of some terrible dancing.

This is a truly shit post. Mockery and contempt for people's sincere faith, "Do it in the butt" snickering gay-hating..... Sir M. P. This is out of place here and it drags us all down.

When I was younger, I went to an awful lot of church services that involved speaking in tongues. It never, ever stopped being very unnerving for me. Especially if the person was the otherwise perfectly normal soccer mom to my left who'd be singing along to the hymns just like everyone else for the past forty minutes. Even when you completely buy into fundamentalist Christianity (and I did), there's still this "holy Hell where did *that* come from?" reaction to it.
I'm curious if anyone here at MeFi has actually done it themselves.

to be exact: same video, new audio for the clip in that previously deleted SLYT
(this is a "video response" to that video)
I'm ashamed to know that much about ... this

Oddly, the creator of the "what what in the butt" is Christian, remember the cross at the beginning of the original video?
"He wanted it because he's a Christian but he doesn't do Christian morality. For him having a burning cross is a way to pay respect to his beliefs." link
That makes this video...weird.

I don't understand the convulsing and speaking in tongues and what-have-you, but I grew up in an uptight Southern Baptist wannabe megachurch. My mother, one of the main soloists, was actually asked to tone down her singing because it was "too soulful" and "sounded black." The most expression ever shown in the congregation was an occasional monotone "amen" and that thing with the stiffly raised hands that looks like you're receiving satellite signals. So, I may not get what you're doing with the rollin' and shakin', but if it helps you feel closer to God somehow, you just go on and enjoy yourself. Unless you're doing the thing with the snakes because that's just insane.

Hell, yeah! I grew up going to meetings like this all the time. Speaking in tongues, exorcisms...the works. The exuberance at these gatherings is contagious and worthy of a Phillip Zimbardo documentary.
Just a reminder: "But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness but is in danger of eternal damnation." (Mark3:29)

I was able to belt out a few tongue-speakings at the Pentecostal meetings when I was a kid. It *felt* real at the time, although looking back I can see that it was mostly a mixture of intense emotions, peer pressure and a sense of religious obligation. The folks that I roll'd with said that speaking in tongues was pretty much a requirement for salvation, so you can see how easy it would be to suddenly "find" the Holy Ghost at one of their meetings.
Also, the dancing in the video is pretty tame for a Saturday Night Revival Meetin', actually.

I know I should find this despicable... and I do... but it's also oddly compelling. I wonder if they messed with the video speed to get it to appear to match that well.

I don't understand the convulsing and speaking in tongues and what-have-youI'm not sure about the convulsing, but the speaking in tongues is one of the very few specific ways that Jesus (is said to have) said that you would recognize a person was his follower. The others:
- Cast out devils in Jesus' name
- Handle snakes
- Drink deadly poison without being hurt
- Heal the sick by laying their hands on them
And handle snakes and drink deadly poisons.
