The only holdouts in New England are Rhode Island and New Hampshire. What would Jonathan Edwards say?

ayuh, they'll do that.

You know who else legalized gay marriage?

Thats right, IOWA.

Ha! I guess now we better start calling it "Gayne," huh? Huh?

Huh, guys?

bluecevalo - I posted this in the non-double thread, but the state legislature just sent a bill to the governor this afternoon. I suspect it's going to be just RI at this point.

Oh hooray! My dad's side of the family is from Maine, and we have a farmhouse in the mountains there. Down the road from us is this adorable couple of your classic, old Maine women who live together and paint, and now they can have legal visitation rights and all that good stuff, if they choose to! If I was up there right now, I would bake them a cake.

Yeah -- as has been pointed out above, yesterday's same-sex marriage in Maine thread is 'up-to-date.' This is essentially a double.

Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern states. New England was pretty rigidly defined in the 17th century.

Republic of NYNEX forever!

Actually, New Hampshire is next. Then New York and New Jersey, most likely.

You know, this is amazing by the speed it's happening. For years there was none, then Netherlands one year, Belgium two years later, then two more, then a few more after those...but Maine is the fifth jurisdiction this year (three US states, two European states) to make equalize marriage rights. And the year isn't even hald way through.

Encyclopedia Britannica: "New England: region, northeastern United States, including the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut."

I don't know if it gets more authoritative than that, but hey, I'm certainly no expert.

Absolutely not! Those are the mid-Atlantic states.

Part of New England! The mind boggles!!

Blasphemy! Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island constitute 'New England.' New York is an Empire of its own. New Jersey. Well, ya' know, it's New Jersey. And Pennsylvania. What can ya' say? Pretzels and Philly cheesteak hoagies. But, at least we give props for Philadelphia, the Consitutional Congress, etc.

Given the number of answers to the New England Question that were posted in the space of two minutes, I'm clearly not the only one who was shocked and appalled at the idea of New Jersey or Pennsylvania as part of my beloved New England.

The thing that I love most about MetaFilter is that the notion of New York being considered a part of New England is substantially more controversial here than the notion of two consenting adults of the same sex being married.
