(Misogyny) Relapse

Sure he sings about brutally raping and killing women, but please don't take offense: "It's hard core, it's dark comedy, it's what Eminem has always been," says his producer, Dr. Dre. Some might be concerned about the misogyny of they lyrics, but it's what (Dre thinks) the kids want, it's what the critics love, (it's a truly enjoyable listen from beginning to end), it's what sells.

The critics condescendingly write of those who take the lyrics literally. And we all know that music doesn't make anyone pick up a gun, knife, fist and go out and do acts of violence or stupidity.

Meanwhile, in Juárez, a culture of Sexism, corporate greed, and drug trafficking make Juárez a deadly town for Mexico's women. The same critics are silent as to why factors that lead to violence against women in other places are harmless entertainment at at home.

(And though Hate Speech might be protected by the first amendment, some kids (at least) are resisting).

Ladies and Gentlemen, from the Number One Album in America:

Fe Fi Fo Fum
I think I smell the scent of a placenta
I enter central park, it's dark, it's winter in December
I see my target with my car, and park and approach her tender
Young girl by the name of Brenda and I pretend to befriend her
Sit down beside her like a spider, hi there girl you mighta
Heard of me before, see whore you're the kinda girl that I'da
Assault and rape and figure why not try to make your pussy wider
Fuck you with an umbrella then open it up while that shits inside ya

This post was deleted for the following reason: I can tell you put some effort into this, but in terms of heavy-handed editorial framing this is not a good post for the front page of metafilter. -- cortex

Dear Eminem: next time you want to get on the front page of MetaFilter, I suggest a "song" about declawing your cat.

Also, YHBT. HTH. HAND.

Are you really drawing a parallel between Eminem and the Juarez killings? That's ridiculous. Why not post a link to GTA IV or Dungeons & Dragons while you're at it?

On the one hand, writing about something is not the same thing as endorsing it. On the other hand, that may be a distinction that's missed or ignored by a not insignificant percentage of the population - including those who choose to write about such things. On the other hand, where did I get this extra hand from?

Yes, I believe there is a connection between misogyny and violence against women.

They're the same people who talk about how the Internets are Serious Business, get excited about their teenagers throwing rainbow parties, and say Hitler jokes are never, ever cool.

Yes, I believe there is a connection between misogyny and violence against women.

There is also a connection between editorializing and posting to one's personal blog.
