What If Cartoons Were Real?

These are, quite simply amazing. Many of the characters you know and love, rendered with painstaking detail. Popeye as he really should be. Seems to be a variety of artists, no clear attributions or origins listed.

Ha, I just changed to my Google Talk picture to that Popeye yesterday. Kinda creepy, kinda cool.

Hmm. Blogs that just repurpose other people's media without attribution are pretty lame. Although I did like This and found out they're making a new TRON movie. So this guy at least has better taste then most of these kinds of sites.

I am shocked at how closely Butt-Head looks like Keanu. It makes perfect sense, in hindsight.

That's kind of cool, yet they all look like malformed potatoes.

It's a third dimension of the Uncanny valley.

What if animated characters were illustrated in a different way, you mean.

Bizarre.

Hey, that Popeye pic appears to be a Rick Baker design, if that signature is anything to go by. Too bad he didn't get to work on the Altman flick.

Also, the American Dad pic is clearly just an undoctored file photo of Sean Hannity.

...but Popeye wasn't an old guy. He was supposed to be squinty and ugly, not elderly.

I don't think anything like this could ever replace Robin Williams as Popeye for me though, perhaps because I saw the movie as a little kid before I'd ever seen the cartoons.

I met a man once who actually had Popeye arms, with his forearms much bigger than his biceps. I think it was from the kind of construction work he did - hauling communications cables. Which, I'm just realizing now, would make sense if Popeye is modeled on an Age of Sail swabbie who spent all his time hauling ropes.

pinky: These are scary.

Very scary. I get extremely frightened when I see pretty good art floating around on the internet without attribution or credit.

And by frightened, I mean annoyed.

There's something really sad about someone putting that much effort into an image of Shaggy.

The Charlie Brown one sort of broke my heart, but then he's always been a bit of a sad fella. Calvin and Hobbes cracked me up, as they generally do. Betty Boop is still giving me the heebie jeebies in this form, too. Oh Holy God, is that Bart under Betty? He's a freaky, freaky little man. Oh, and double that right up for Shaggy. Fuck. I still hate Beevis and Butthead all these years later. And yes, Popeye was fantastic.

What a fun site! Thanks for posting this. But yeah, the lack of attribution on the blog is disheartening.

I have no idea why this is still here, unless I'm the only one flagging (AND I FLAG SO HARD).

This is a doublepost with the new link being to a site that steals other people's content without attribution to push ads. This is Worth1000Blue or something. I'm not good at creating names.

So this guy at least has better taste then most of these kinds of sites.

Well, his Tron article is just a word-for-word repost of the official announcement that's posted to about a thousand other sites.

(As for the movie, Disney showed the same materal at last year's Comic-Con, and officially confirmed that they're working on a new Tron in September last year.)

What if Cartoons Were Real?

Well, this is one question where I can really answer from personal experience. Years ago I met the man who posed for the original Smiley Face cartoon. He was quite a bit older when I met him and the cursory fame that Smiley Face brought him had receded faster than the hairline on his yellowing bald head. Hardly any of the Smiley Face money had come his way. He was bitter. Sad, even. There were times during our conversation - between one Gin and Tonic and the next - where I could see the old Smiley Face, full of cheer, grinning from ear to ear, but mostly he was a Frowny Face. It still makes me sad.
