Are you too fat for japan?
For those who just want to cut to the chase, the new maximum waistline size is 85 centimeters (33.5 inches) for men and 90 centimeters (35.4 inches) for women. After reading the article it is unclear exactly what the penalties for exceeding these limits are.

This post was deleted for the following reason: seriously? ths is one fo those "hey this is a topic that doesn't go really well here, maybe you could make an effort when you craft your posts so that they don't turn into LOLFATTIEZ threads" situations. -- jessamyn
First two comments explain how the article is completely misleading.

Apparently they don't fine/punish you directly, but an employer with too many fat employees risks having to contribute more money to the national health-insurance system, so there is doubtless a lot of pressure on anyone over the limit.

It's not what they're doing that's interesting imho, it's the size limit. How many people are there with 34 inch waistlines that would be considered fit by any reasonable doctor?

Oh look, a misleadingly provocative news headline! On a website!
Also, it might be interesting to see what the 33.5"/men and 35.4"women waistline dimensions would be if adjusted for European/U.S. height averages.

What could go wrong? A little peer pressure in the workplace to trim your waistline can't be that bad, right? It's not like there's a mental health crisis going on that this could....hmm....uh oh....
