Ipad: it only needed just one more thing.

The Ipad as a truly useful device is still debatable. But, this guy figured out how to make so much more functional. I still disagree that's in an obvious genius product. I'm still with Manjoo and perhaps even Gruber -- that's it's a mixed bag.

I still need to invent reasons to use mine -- never a good sign for a revolutionary device. Perhaps I only needed velcro. :)

I have to say, the dashboard application is much more elegant than the video of the guy that permanently fitted an iPad into his car dashboard. That was an engineering feat, no doubt, but this makes it so easy and you can remove the component easily to avoid a theft temptation.

"Ipad"

Seriously? Or is that some form of branding-be-damned rebellion?

I think more people should use the phrase "street tweet" or "street tweeting", or maybe even "tweeting the streets".

That's not very streets ahead.

Sorry about the use of "I" in the FPP hippybear....I actually did a control-F to see how often people use that pronoun in FPPs and, alas, it was me. I rarely FPP and I will admit it felt awkward to state so much of my personal opinion there. I was hoping to stir debate....I like Apple but I feel that this device is not going to be the revolution there other big iproducts have been. Sorry. If it means anything, it did feel strange to post like I did.

This is not great criteria for a front page post.

The guy who installed the iPad in his dash is using it to control car audio, backup camera, etc. This is just... Velcro. Permanent installation and integration crushes Velcro like a grape.

iPad is thin. It's powerful. It has 200,000 apps and counting. You already know how to use it.

Why, yes... I watched the series finale of Lost. Why do you ask?

Also that Velcro tape adhesive-backing glue is a bitch to get off of anything. I wouldn't stick it to my car dashboard.

Stick-on Velcro, suction-cup-backed gadget holders, high-friction pads, and other devices and things for attaching gadgets to various places on auto dashboards have been around since time immemorial. Not even remotely interesting, sorry.

Nope, not until it can project the street map as a heads-up on the inside of the windshield and put a blinking orange outline around me on my bicycle out in front of the guy -- while he's staring at the damn streetmap with his head full of what he imagines he'll be doing at his destination instead of seeing up the block.

Leave a pixel or three for external reality.

A broadcast signal that says "nitwit is fiddling with touchpad device nearby" that would set off a collision alarm I could carry with me would also be really helpful. Especially if it includes a doppler sensor to tell me the nitwit is coming in my direction, and how fast, from how far away. Not that I want to _know_ those details, I just want the alarm feature to know what to do with them.

Sheesh.

I do this with my iPhone now... Soft Velcro tape on back of phone, rough strip on the dash of my old 240d... This is rocket surgery somehow?

I think it would be fun to go up to everyone who rides a motorcycle and ask them "what can this do that a car can't" and feel all satisfied that you aren't a sucker like them.

If 'stirring debate' is a euphemism for pouring some accelerant on the smoldering embers of a potential flame-war, then I bet you'll get it.

Not anymore. (Unless you are using some atomic mutant Velcro, then all bets are off.)

I don't trust their new spray stuff; what you want is the little bottle of liquid.
And no, it's still not as good as MEK, but it also doesn't cause horrible cancer and dissolve plastic.

Sorry, nothing to add otherwise and no opinions about the iPad.

Because if Metafilter is bad at only one thing, it is arguing about Apple products. We clearly need more practice.

Not sure I want to be a passenger in the car when it gets hit from behind. Isaac Newton tells me that the iPad is going to fly back at neck height and cause some ugly injuries.

Hey, look, we even had a post about an in-dash iPad. No velcro, even.

Apple should add a Flash demo of the iPad so that I can try it out before I waste the gas to go to the Apple Store to check one out. My MacBook Pro is plugged in, so battery life is not an issue, Steve.

Hippybear -- I said sorry. Again, sorry. I post about once a year on a FPP. Pretty sure I am not going to need my own blog. I'm not sure what else to state. Mods can pull it. I'll make sure the next FPP will be out the cure for cancer or something.
posted by skepticallypleased at 2:36 PM on May 25, 2010

Mygoditsbob, just think about that razor-thin aluminum body being propelled by the airbags.

Actually, getting surgery to remove an iPad might get you on the front page of Digg and/or Reddit, and at least one deleted post here. So, it'd be okay in terms of fame, one of your most valuable assets.

Now Velcro Cats, there's a FPP.

I have no idea how these people got their cats adhered to the dashboard or why.

I'm not sure what else to state.

Stop defending the post and start making the comments you wanted to see. Really the only way.

Anyways, as to the iPad, I have no real complaints with mine. I think it's rather remarkable that it's been out for 6 weeks and they haven't needed to issues any fixes. Don't see that kind of software quality nowadays. But I don't feel the need to convince other people they should buy one, or argue its merits after I've bought it. That's for Apple's advertising department to do.
