Tourists and Locals

Tourists and Locals is a flickr set of maps.
Data from geotagged flickr photos is compiled and plotted over the maps of various major cities. Photos are compared to the overall photostream of a given photographer. Blue dots indicate a photo taken by a local (here defined as a photographer who has geotagged shots in the same city for several months or more). Red dots indicate a photo taken by a tourist (here defined as a photographer whose geotags seem to indicate residency elsewhere and only a brief stint at the site of the capture).
A follow-up project among users of flickr has been attempting to identify the "hot spots" frequently reappearing.

Makes a lot of sense. In San Francisco, only tourists take pictures of the Golden Gate bridge and Alcatraz. And they don't go to the Mission district, which locals love.

Pretty cool! Flickr should run with that and make maps where you can rollover and see user uploaded photos.

Seems like the 'yellow' pictures are much likely to be taken on water. Kind of strange.

Thanks ryanshepard, too bad there's only like 5 photos they've chosen for my town. I'd prefer a map that shows them all!

Seems like the 'yellow' pictures are much likely to be taken on water. Kind of strange.
From the info:
Yellow points are pictures where it can't be determined whether or not the photographer was a tourist (because they haven't taken pictures anywhere for over a month). They are probably tourists but might just not post many pictures at all.
My guess is that people will take a photo when they're on the water because it's a bit unusual (for most people at least) and since you get pretty nice views they might go ahead and upload it. But since these people aren't on the water all that often, and they aren't regular photo posters, they show up as yellow dots.
