Colorado man bags trophy bear Richard Kendell of Craig, Colorado, found a bear's den, and waited outside for five hours for the bear to emerge so he could shoot it. The bear stayed put, so Kendell crawled into the den and shot the bear.
It's a state record at 703 pounds. State officials say his act is legal, but are mulling possibly making such a deed illegal in the future.
This post was deleted for the following reason: That's pretty shitty hunting, yeah, but a tiny news wire writeup is far too thin for a post to the front page. -- cortex
That is fucked up.
FTA: "There was only one thing going through Kendall’s head at that point, he said, in the face of a bear ready to defend home and self.
'Shoot him.' "
Or, how 'bout you don't crawl into some random dangerous animal's cave in the middle of the winter with the intent to kill it?

I'm not really a strong proponent of animal rights or anything like that, but part of me hopes that a bear will someday invade this man's house and maul him to death while he sleeps peacefully in his own bed.

Without dobut this guy has a gun at home for "self-defense," yet has no compunction walking into somebody else's home and shooting them.

I'd wager the majority of hunters on the western slope would be agreeing with me.

That wasn't even hunting, if you ask me. And I'm generally pro-hunting.

I love laws that are designed to make hunting more sporting or more fair. I have represented people charged with putting bait out for deer and for spotlighting deer (shining a light from a car on them at night). These are both illegal activities. I asked the Wildlife officer what the purpose of those laws was. He told me that the laws were designed to make it more fair. "If you could just put out food and shoot them when they came to it, it wouldn't be fair."
I asked him it he thought it was more unfair to allow people to put food out for deer or to allow people to use guns to shoot them.
"We get to use guns. Other than that, we want it to be a fair fight."
Fair, indeed. I am sure the bear would have been less offended by the hunter coming into his den than he was by the use of a gun. I would go as far as to suggest that the bear might have welcomed the unarmed hunter into his den to do battle.

Bear ... arms.
I'm fairly libertarian as these things go (guns, hunting &c.), but this?
No.

This is pretty sad. The bear was probably so large because it was hibernating. I don't really have a problem with hunting, but this is just, I dunno, crass.
I'd also like to note that the bear would have been within her rights to shoot him as Colorado is a Castle Doctrine state. People have long joked about arming bears, but I think it's time we start acting.

the only fair way to fight a bear like that is wearing the power loader from Aliens. then you get to say 'You can’t even believe how much I respect that bear.'

Ok, I'm from a province where there is a fair amount of hunting. I had a license to fire a rifle and shotgun before I had a license to drive. I ate game fairly regularly before I knew what "game" meant.
And you know what?
Hunting bear is the easiest fucking thing in the world to do. Oh, gee. How will I ever bag an animal that has little fear, is always hungry, and happens to be an omnivore with an excellent sense of small and is incredibly curious?
Answer: make some bacon in the woods. Don't properly dispose of the scraps. Keep a gun handy.
Bear hunters are pussies.

I still think real hunters go into the woods naked except for a paid of antlers strapped to their heads, stalk and chase down their prey, and kill them with their bare hands.

I think only a typical young man armed only with a knife (say, six or eight inches long) should be allowed to hunt a bear.

That wasn't sporting.I agree that it wasn't sporting, but I'm not really sure that it's significantly less sporting than any other hunting activity in modern times. It's not like it's even remotely a fair contest; bears (deer, tigers, rhinos, elephants, wombats, whatever) die, humans live, virtually 100%.
I'd wager the majority of hunters on the western slope would be agreeing with me.

I agree this doesn't seem sporting, but I am having trouble seeing where the line is supposed to be. So the cave is the bear's metaphorical house/bedroom? What is it when you shoot a deer grazing in a field? The deer's kitchen? Its restaurant? Isn't an animal at home anywhere in the forest? You are going into the woods with a gun intending to kill an animal that lives there. It seems to me everything else is just haggling over the details.

Raised as I was in rural Idaho, I'm fairly familiar with a lot of hunters (including my dad). They'd regard this asshole with the same feelings they have about spotlighters and poachers: naked contempt and detestation.

Eh. The bear's dead either way.
Personally my aversion to being killed at home is just as strong as my aversion to being killed while running from a hunter in the woods.

Marisa, you'd be suprised at how many people go retro for their hunting. It's not a lot of people, total, but surprising since you (maybe it's just me) think the answer would be none.

Kendall told the Craig Daily Press, “You can’t even believe how much I respect that bear."
I respect animals and also many people a lot too, but I don't want to kill them. That is the least respectful thing that I can think of doing.
