Kylie Minogue's anthrax link? You'll have to scroll down to the 'KYLIE SHIPS PLATINUM' piece, but police are investigating an envelope sent to EMI in London. The envelope contained soil as well as a note claiming the soil was tainted with either anthrax or foot and mouth disease.

I'm not a medical expert, but I believe Anthrax IS foot and mouth disease.

Qrys: No, you're not a medical expert. Anthrax is not foot and mouth disease. If you have a dictionary in your house, you could look both up. Kylie Minogue's publicist has foot IN mouth disease. I'd call him/her/it a vulture but that would be unfair to honest scavengers.

Anthrax is not foot-and-mouth disease. The former is bacterial; the latter is viral.

I had hoof-and-mouth (that's what my mom called it) when I was a kid. My mom still thinks that's funny. She may not be the most sensitive, but she wouldn't giggle if it had been anthrax. Apparently hoof-and-mouth is relatively common among dirt-eaters.

Hoof-and-mouth is what the disease is typically called in the US. Foot-and-mouth is the British/Commonwealth term.

Still not a medical expert, but I was able to find this on some web site:

"Foot-and-mouth disease, also known as Anthrax, is a very infectious disease among cattle, sheep, goat and pigs"

some other web site:
"On the subject of anthrax (Hoof and Mouth Disease)..."
(sites just linked for reference, not because they're interesting - don't bother going to them)

of course, most of the stuff I've found lists it separately and this spells it out clearly:

"let me assure you that Foot and Mouth Disease is not Anthrax"

So obviously I got this same bad information as these other people did. Hopefully we all learnt something today. I know I did, I learnt how to set up a Cisco router for a T1. Ooooh.

Qrys: I've no idea what search words you used because I've never gotten *any* of the sites you pointed to just now. Try "veterinary anthrax" or "anthrax CDC" for better FAQS. Or check the umpteen other anthrax threads here on MeFi---almost every one has a legitimate source link included. (*sigh* I really wish all the anthrax links were in one thread.)

Better yet, check your local library.

Cattle are so much more susceptible to anthrax than humans are that I'm not going worry about it until cows start dropping like flies.

Congrats on setting up the Cisco router! I couldn't have done it. Just goes to show we each have our own areas of expertise.

Well, I'm tha king of far-out searches, man.

I searched google for 'hoof and mouth disease anthrax' and picked out the ones that had the necessary bad information.

A quote from one of the pages sums it up pretty well (as had a prior post) "Foot and Mouth Disease is caused by a Rhinovirus, whereas Anthrax is caused by a bacteria."
