Wow, I've never actually seen ROM hacking used like this. Is this common? Generally I've only seen texture swaps and making new levels using data that already exists on the cartridge. For this hack it seems they either created new models, or exported them out of Zelda and into Goldeneye. Impressive.

I'd take "Hey, listen!" over this any day.posted by lemuring at 7:40 AM on March 27, 2012 [1 favorite]
Just to be clear, this not something that's hidden inside of Goldeneye. The author's page about the project is here, where he talks about the tools used to make this ROM patch.
-'1964 v1.1' emulator and 'Nemu 64 graphics (combine debug)' graphic plugin for extracting the geometry of the map in VRML format and textures in BMPposted by Edogy at 8:01 AM on March 27, 2012 [4 favorites]
-'3D Studio MAX R6' for converting the VRML into DWG
-AutoCAD 2004 to edit the DWG file, modelling interiors, creating colisons, portals... and exporting the files to 3DS format.
-'DeleD CE' to import the 3DS files, texturing, grouping geometry and export it all to OBJ format.
-'Paint Shop PRO 7' and 'Irfan View' for editing some textures.
-'GE Setup Editor' for editing the GoldenEye rom: adding textures to the rom, injecting the level, fix and colour textures, adding shadows and lights, edit the colision (clipping) and portals, put guns and spawn points, modify the skies settings, change the image and name of the map... and creating the patch.
Wait. People actually use VRML? I always assumed that it was a circa-1999 internet gimmick.

I figure VRML, being as simple as it is, is the least computationally-intense way to extract models by way of an emulator plugin.

This is pretty cool as well: The same guy transferred it over to Perfect Dark. Here is a video of that.

I'll see that someone already made a "Hey, listen!" joke, so I'll just say that this looks amazing.
I'd pay some money to have my favorite N64 games redone in Goldeneye. Maybe the first world of Mario 64, a Mario Kart track, and maybe a Tony Hawk level.
On skateboards.

ALONE! TAKE THIS.
I thought the Goldeneye thing was alright and all, but that tumblr led me to the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe show bible. Thank you, codacorolla, for taking away what little free time I had tonight.
