Brother Brain is an artist who makes colorful, vibrant, seamlessly looping animations from classic video games. Click on an image for a larger version, and an annotation of the game that the image comes from.
This NES Top Gun gif reminded me what 90% of playing one of the only NES games I had as a kid was like.

Galaga had the Enterprise?!
Yes. It was the enemy graphic used for the last Challenging Stage before they cycled. A little joke thrown in by the programmers.

I love retro gaming, and even just got an SNES emulator for my Android (making the buttons bigger really helps). But I don't really get the appeal of this other than it being a catalogue for message board avatars.

It's because Mario and the background graphics are from Mario 2, but the Question Box is from Mario 1.
