God I love these videos. The Spy one is absolutely brilliant, and the last moment of the Heavy one ("Maybe. Maybe") deserves an Oscar.

Also I just started playing TF2 -- hey is that new Mad Men show any good, by the way? -- and is there a MeFi/MeFightClub server? I remember a while ago I got Steam invites via the MetaFilter group, but it's been a while.

I stopped around about the time they introduced the medic upgrades - nothing against it, I just ended up having no time in life for games I couldn't pause - so I'm suspecting wouldn't recognize the thing now. How well have they kept it balanced with all this stuff? The balance in it's original incarnation was exquisite.

Extremely well-balanced for the most part. Occasionally a new weapon (which for the most part are sidegrades rather than strict upgrades; you trade off one aspect of the basic class weapon for a boost to another aspect) is overpowered or severely underpowered, but Valve usually fixes this within a month or two.

The new game modes they have introduced since launch are likewise hella fun.

For me, Team Fortress 2 is one of those games that just stays installed because it's just basic enough that you can jump in and be competitive at any time but so engrossing you could devote hours and hours to it. It really is fantastic without being as difficult to get into as COD/MW.

The truly bizarre thing about TF2 is the hat-based economy that's cropped up. I made ninety dollars selling a digital object that confers no in-game benefit and which I got for free by pre-ordering a thirty-dollar game.

Other than that, I load it up every so often, confirm that yes, I really do suck that much at competitive FPS, and go back to third-person murderin'.

this backstory is either predicted or inspired by 4chan's /v/
Look how happy they all are when I point my happy gun at them! They dance around and yell, having the time of their life! Oh, how I love making people happy!
It's been six years now since they let me out of that scary place. I lived there all my life until the nice doctor and general let me out. They said I could help people. Make them happy and make them stop fighting.
The general gave me a happy gun that shoot magical red dust that makes people dance and sing. He put me in my sane suit though, so I couldn't make myself happy with the dust. He say I have a mission to make everyone wearing the other color happy.
I love it so much I can't help laughing with them! They are so tired from the dancing that they fall over and go to sleep. I wish I could do that. Because of the sane mask, I can't ask them to wake up or talk to the other happy soldiers on my team. They look at me like am crazy or something when I talk to them.
Maybe they aren't as happy as i thought. When all the other color is happy, I'll have to make my friends happy as well.

I adore how meta/self-aware the whole TF2 universe is. Each of the characters mean something - not only to themselves but to each other - and the world they inhabit doesn't work unless they all exist at the same time. They're also at least somewhat aware of their own mortality; fear of the pyro/heavy relying on medic to fix him, etc.

At the same time they seem to understand that their conflict is never-ending: the recklessness of the scout, the overconfidence of the heavy, the carefree engineer; none of these would exist without the knowledge that their battle will ultimately repeat unto infinity.

So thank you, Valve. Thank you for making a game that doesn't pretend to mean more than whatever value I attach to it. It's refreshing.

According to this table earbuds are worth about 24 keys. A key is about 2 1/2 refined metal, and last I knew 1 refined metal is about 50 cents. That's $30, give or take market fluctuations.

The trading process itself is super easy. Just run the game, connect to a trade server, and make your offer in chat. Trading for real money is risky, but if you're willing to take payment in games or TF2 items you can do everything through the entirely safe Steam trading system. For real-money trades you want to go through a site with a reputation system. I've done a couple trades through TF2-Trader, and Valve's official trading forum is always active.

Before you start, read Valve's trading policy; it's short and has a good overview of the risks involved.

posted by RolandOfEld at 2:16 PM on June 27, 2012

Anyone mind giving an equally awesome rundown of how one crafts/gains refined metal/keys?

TF2 has an in-game crafting system. Every so often, you will "find" a new weapon or a hat (hats are much rarer). If it is a weapon or hat you already happen to own, you can smelt it down with other similar weapons and turn it into metal. You can then use this metal (a LOT of this metal) and craft new weapons or, more importantly, hats. This certainly takes a while, but if you play a lot of TF2 it mounts up relatively quickly.

Sometimes you will find crates instead of hats. Crates cannot be smelted. In order to get stuff from crates, you need keys - the crates usually contain "strange" weapons (which get fun nicknames as you kill more people with them) or hats. You get keys by buying them through Steam with money, which is why keys are accepted TF2 "hard currency."
posted by mightygodking at 2:20 PM on June 27, 2012 [1 favorite]

Ok, cool..... hope me one last time: How does that system work with private servers?

Keep explaining it to me like I'm five, 'cuz it seems like they must have a pretty awesome crypto/security system in place to prevent people from abusing their private server to generate trade gear for their own benefit. Or does this give/take only happen when on a Valve-monitored (somehow) server?
posted by RolandOfEld at 2:25 PM on June 27, 2012

Valve keeps track of who's playing no matter what server they're on (as long as you're not on a completely private, closed-to-the-outside-world LAN server or something), and all the item generation is done by them. The only way to “hack” it with a private server is to create one that doesn't log people off for inactivity, so players can just log in, turn off the monitor and let the items stack up while they do other things.

Or at least that's how it worked when upgrades were first introduced. There might be other ways now.

griphus: "Throw in an explanation of why everyone wants this thing and deal"

So there's five items that make up the heart of the tf2 economy: These items were some of the first promotional giveaways in tf2's history. They were time limited and so there's a finite number of them. Most other promotion items since then have been craftable or are not time-limited or are available for purchase in the mannco store. If there are, say, 100 bill's hats globally, you know that there will never be some action that will increase the count.

Crafting metals are the virtual coins of the economy and come in three varieties in increasing value: scrap, reclaimed and refined. Keys are a resource used to unlock a MannCo supply crate, which will have some range of interesting items. Crates (and thus keys) are important because they are the only way that Unusual Hats are generated in the game. I'll come back to those in a bit. But you might also get low grade stuff, too! It's a virtual good lottery ticket. Weird fact: Keys sell from the store at $2.50, but have a trade value of $2. I don't know why.

Other cosmetic items like the Anger from the game Brink, will drop after the promotional game has been out for a while. The global stock of Angers is theoretically unbounded. In fact, I could just up and buy one for $7.50 from the in-game virtual good store. But that would be stupid, I could get one just by trading from someone else who has one for whatever hats that person liked, or maybe metal or keys.

So insofar as there might be fungible assets in TF2, it's crafting metals or keys. But it gets unwieldy to say, I will trade you 7 refined metal (which will take several weeks for a single account to generate) for the High Five taunt. But two keys might be worth 7 refined and thus make the transaction feasible in a short time.

Strange hats can sell for literally hundreds of dollars. If you open a crate to find a Burning Flames Team Captain, you've found something that people will pay $800 plus for. That's a lot of $2.50 keys. Because the Bill's, buds and heads are a known quantity, they will work as an intermediate unit of worth between metal, $2.50 keys and $800 hats. Now, honestly, people will probably not sell such a hat for intermediary virtual good and instead insist on escrowed account money, but for things of middling rarity like interesting Vintage or Genuine quality goods, they could ease negotiations significantly.

There are other items like the HOUWAR, which people got literally through having (e.g. buying) a stupid amount of games one summer and completing 28 tasks across all those games. Depending on the day, this will cost you between 8-11 sets of earbuds -- it's just like the Bill's, buds and heads, but it's much, much rarer. Maybe think of it like the $100 bill to the Bill's $5 denomination, the buds' $20 and the head's $50.
posted by boo_radley at 4:34 PM on June 27, 2012 [8 favorites]

Oh! as for the why: People are either looking for free money items as above or, in my case, I like Bill's hats because they look rad as hell when you paint them.

But paints are a one-time use thing (and another $2.50 for the good colors), so in order to have 2 different colored bill's hats, you have to literally have two of the items.

If you haven't jumped in yet (and if you haven't, you should, because TF2 is one of the greatest games of the last decade, the game that launched MefightClub, and it's free free free to play), then now would be a great time. And if you haven't fired up TF2 in a while, why not drop in for a few rounds. There's an awful lot going on in the game these days, but you can still play it the way you always used to and ignore all the metagame stuff. (well, except there are probably going to be a lot of Pyros around, probably, but maybe less so than on random pubbie servers)
