My wife was just getting over the squee from the seven-week-old bulldog puppy that was in the clinic for a checkup today. Now she's back to a quivering puddle of squee again.
THANKS A LOT. Hope you're happy with yourself.

Do we always have to be judging dogs based on their appearance? Can we not do this?

Puppies are always cute, unfortunately this one will grow up to be a yapping patio louse.
And yes, I am chihuahuaist.

Not to rain on the parade, but I've seen this video before on another site, where a more experienced person pointed out that this puppy is likely suffering from hydrocephalus, an unfortunately common condition in chihuahuas that causes balance problems.

Our dog has special needs and a mess of health problems and I am sure Willow the possibly-hydrocephalic chihuahua will be extra-loved.

I just adopted a chihuahua from a shelter last week and she is an absolute doll. She is politically active, but hates to wear her wittle cone though, she wis a wittle baby! Anyone want to see some pics?

I'd love to get a long haired chihuahua. If I found one in the street or something I would most certainly take it in but I can't buy a dog in good conscience.

Getting a dog from a reputable shelter is basically the same thing if the ethics of the acquisition is what's keeping you.

I should look into it, I figured long haired chihuahuas were pretty uncommon in shelters. A friend of mine looked for a long time before finally buying one.

My cat Trilby, who hardly ever shows any interest in what's happening on my computer screen, showed a lot of interest in this video. Like, "suddenly snapped into predator mode and did the stealth crawl towards it" interest. I think he thought the puppy was some kind of rodent. Hey, it looked kind of rodent-like.

Getting anything except a pit mix from a shelter is rare, but if you don't need a long-haired chihuahua Right Now, making regular calls to a few shelters and researching breed-specific rescues can yield results eventually. We got a "designer" dog breed from a shelter than I can only assume people pay obscene amounts of money for from breeders. Animal control found her on the side of the road in Staten Island. We think she escaped from a breeder because she had puppies at a very young age.

(We weren't actually looking for that breed, we just asked the shelter to show us some mild-mannered dogs in the 20-lb range and there she was. But if someone called them up and asked if they had one, they'd have said 'yes.')

Yeah I'm in no rush, when I say look into I mean within the next 5-10 years. I take the long-view.
Maybe I'll get a chinchilla. I feel less bad buying one, they actually are rodents.

griphus: "Getting anything except a pit mix from a shelter is rare..."
That is not true in my area; pits are not very common here, and I don't know where Ad Hominem lives. Ad, if you want a long haired Chihuahua, keep an eye on shelters in your area using Petfinder, or contact an outfit like this one that's closer to you. If you're in New York, 761 pages of results came up for a Petfinder search of "Chihuahua" and a New York zip code.
Don't buy a dog. Adopt.

As of a week ago, the shelter near me was about 40% pits, 40% chihuahuas, and 20% everything else. If you want a chihuahua, they are there in numbers.

Chihuahua's are the 2nd most euthanized breed in Vegas, there are whole rescue organizations dedicated to getting chi's out of Vegas and Southern Cali where they die in shelters by the thousands and into other states where they have better chances of getting adopted. A gorgeous, young, healthy and friendly long haired Chi wandered into my mom's yard last month, matted and filthy but otherwise fine. No chip, no lost dog ads, no inquiries at the shelters so now my mom has a beautiful, tiny sweet long hair chi of her own.
