"People steal these machines and make these cards, then they get free satellite TV," Orihuela said.

Haha, I know a guy who used to do that (still has his card), actually you don't need to steal equipment. He would buy DSS dishes and then return them sans-card, he once stole a DSS card right out of display model at radio shack though. The TV went blue and everything and he just walked out, it was crazy :P

It's more then free TV though, I mean you can get things that you simply can't pay for due to political reasons, like local TV from all over the nation.

I'll have to pass this on to my friend, I'm sure he'll get a kick out of the fact that OJ got caught with test cards :P

Mr Simpson can't be given three strikes since he has a few foul balls--no convictions....Three strieks means three convictions.

Three strikes in a metaphorically.... In the sense that this may have been his last chance for a somewhat normal life, and he blew it.

Not a literal translation of the "3-Strikes" law.

Wouldn't a football metaphor be more appropriate here? Like "OJ's deep in his own end zone on third and 25 (with several penalties)"?

Please. Stealing satellite TV has little to nothing to do with politics. At least try to make an "access to information" argument.

well.. technically.. the DTV cards are owned by news datacom.

On the back of the card it says:
"This card is the property of News Datacom Ltd. and must be returned upon request..."

Isn't stealing pay-tv part of the constitutional rights of Americans? is it not a right of passage for every football loving, beer swigging Homer out there?
posted by Frasermoo at 6:27 AM on December 4, 2001

anathema: the point was that there are stations you can't get even if you offer to pay for them, like Chicago local affiliates when you live in New York.

There is no technical reason for those stations to not be available. The desicion was made by corporations and backed by legislation.

That, and stealing copywritten music.

Jerseygirl - I think you mean copyrighted. Sorry to be a pedantic bore, but copywritten music would presumably be something cooked up to order by an advertising exec or a journalist.

Oh come on, let's hijack it! I'm curious what you think is 'weak logic'--that stealing is justified by the fact that local channels are unavailable normally? Or that local channels are unavailable for political reasons? One is a moral question and one is a fact. I'm not sure where logic comes into it.

just indulging in a bit of copywrite infringement. i'm sure skylar doesn't mind. =)

Greaseproof?

My gut reaction to this, based on nothing but my intestinal juice, is that OJ, deep down somewhere, wants to get caught. Outwardly, he's the guy that got away with murder, but inside he longs for punishment, perhaps even death.

I love you too, Nordberg.

By the way, every comma in this post means 5$ goes to chairty, and that's a lot of commas.

an investigation into the importation of the drug Ecstasy

as part of a two-year investigation called "Operation X,"

who was the simpleton who named the investigation? next week: "Operation Weed"

ooh! they should have called it "Operation Freshly Squeezed" or "Operation From Concentrate"

Any bets on the legal conclusion? //insert obligatory comment about distinction between legal guilt/innocence and the question "did he do it?"//

Given his teflon-like, lawyermagical history, the odds are on "not guilty."

Heh - OJ should consider a career as a hit man. I mean, it's not as if he would ever be convicted, so the primary drawback of the job is gone!
posted by yesster at 10:25 AM on December 4, 2001

Yeah, how come you two, supposedly different, people made then exact same comment?

By the way, you don't really need to steal any hardware besides the little card for satellite TV. The card is a smart card, and the decryption algorithm for the video signal is actually run on the card itself. The article made it sound like he had machines used to actually create new cards, and that those are what was stolen. I guess if I had all these free cards lying around, I would probably use it to watch TV, but that isn't what this is about. Manufacturing and istribution of these cars acould be a serious source of income for someone with a huge settlement to pay.
posted by donkeymon at 10:25 AM on December 4, 2001

Will someone please just give O.J. his own TV sitcom? This way he'll get a lot of attention for a couple months, and then blissfully disappear from the world spotlight forever, with only the occasional "Whatever happened to" biography on a syndicated show which'll be easily ignored.

Come to think of it, I'd like a TV sitcom.

i dont consider it theft if it's something that you'd pay for, but they wont sell it to you, and all you're doing is unscrambling it.

Personally I would definately pay for local channels nationwide. Who wouldn't want to see Letterman at 8 or 9pm? Who wouldn't want to switch over to a local newscast of breaking news in the city that it's originating?

And as someone who buys the baseball, football and basketball package, why shouldnt I be allowed to see more than one baseball game on a Saturday morning other than the one that FOX wants to throw at me? Even our President knows that this is the information age.

When I was a kid all TV was free, cable came and we paid for the cable and we still had commercials. Now DSS is here and we pay for the dish, the service, the extra service and there's more commercials.

I'm not complaining, indeed, I say Viva Capitalism, Viva Directv smart cards, and thank you OJ, for giving back to your community.

No, what I'd really like to watch is a sitcom based on OJ's family life now, in Florida, something like The Jeffersons, with wacky neighbors and all. Too bad Sherman Hemsley is a little too old to play the lead
