Bon Mashups

The Bon Iver Mashup Album is now available for download, and it's excellent. Check out the trailer for a preview.
Nice. The ones with a Bon Iver backing track and someone else's vocal remind me, at the same time, both how beautiful some of Vernon's recent instrumental bits are and how old the whole falsetto / fully impressionistic lyrics thing is getting for me.

I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did.
Special doubt was put on the first track...I listen to the record on a regular basis, and had no idea how a mashup would play. Pleasantly surprised.

I'm sure this is all perfectly listenable and the product of talented people, but personally if you had asked me yesterday what would be the most obnoxious musical idea I can possibly think of that doesn't exist yet, it would either be "Mumford & Sons Mashup Album" or "Bon Iver Mashup Album." So yeah, unfortunately I'm going to lie awake at night knowing this particular thing exists.

I really like Bon Iver, but that's some funny shit right there.
Thanks for posting this.

For those of you who, like me, haven't ever actually had reason to say 'Bon Iver' out loud, here's a handy pronunciation guide.

here's a handy pronunciation guide .
It's pronounced "Bawn EYE-ver". "Ralf Fynes" is the lead singer.

I mean, not to be all "your favorite band sucks", but who intentionally names their band something that difficult to pronounce? And you KNOW they did it just so they could say "well actually" - snort - "it's BONE EE-VAIR". And I just looked it up and they're from fucking Wisconsin, so it's not like they're French.

Transgressive, in-groupy band names are nothing new. The The, Public Enemy, Dead Kennedys (doubly so, because the "real" fans knew that it wasn't The Dead Kennedys)...

Looking forward to listening to this, but I'd hoped that there was a full version of Bon Joviver on there.

The first time I heard Bon Iver was the last time I wanted to listen to the sort of music Bon Iver plays.
But I like this a lot. It's hilarious. It takes a lot of talent to make "Land Down Under" sound maudlin.

I'll give you the first part. I myself said it incorrectly for like a year after I heard of them. To their credit, they've said they totally don't care how you pronounce it.

There is indeed something rather hilarious about the elegiac, maudlin "Land Down Under" mashup. One can't quite take it seriously. But I have to say, I found the "Lonely in Minnesota Tonight" mashup with INXS's "Need You Tonight" to be very pretty and genuinely, weirdly touching. The mashup turns "Need You Tonight" into something much more longing and desperate than the original.
No real opinions on the rest yet, but the download was definitely worth it if only for "Lonely in Minnesota Tonight."

On the name Bon Iver, from Wikipedia:
According to Vernon, it was during this time that the "Bon Iver" moniker first entered his mind; while bedridden with mononucleosis, he began watching the 1990s TV series Northern Exposure on DVD. One episode depicts a group of citizens in Alaska, where the show is set, emerging from their homes into the first snowfall of the winter and wishing one another bon hiver (pronounced: [bɔn‿ivɛːʁ], French for "good winter"). This was initially transcribed by Vernon as "boniverre"; however, when he learned of its proper French spelling, he elected not to use it, deciding "hiver" reminded him too much of "liver", the site of his illness at the time
Most things Bon Iver are less pretention, more thoughtful bits derived from introspection. And Northern Exposure.
