The first entry was dioptase, my wife's favorite mineral. She prefers it to actual emeralds.
The best part of dating and marrying a geologist is that they prefer the rocks on their jewelry to be interesting rather than valuable. She doesn't even like diamonds.
The worst part is moving. OMG boxes of rocks.
And I'll lol if our house is broken into and they steal the TV but leave the $1200 chunk of pyrite sitting right next to it.
The whole point being I'll be forwarding this to Mrs.Husk.

I literally said "You know I do" to the screen reading this on my phone. The cab driver fortunately was already talking on his phone so it wasn't nearly as weird as it could have been.

Cool pics!
Also, they are not rocks, they are specimens. That's what I tell my husband, anyway.
And dioptase is neat. I think I have one somewhere. In a box.

For my birthday last week, my 5-year old son gave me a box of rocks; "a rock collection". I think it was mostly gravel from the driveway, but still. So proud. I'll have to pull out his Grandfather's mineral collection from the basement, and maybe even the old prospecting maps. And then, like my father did for me, I'll send him in to school with some uranium ore and a geiger counter for show-and-tell.

Came here to make the Breaking Bad joke, saw it was in the title.

Yep, I also came in to make the Breaking Bad joke. Still, these minerals are pretty nice, especially given that I'm currently paralyzed, both physically and emotionally.

If you ever have a chance, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has a specimen collection that it bills as the world's finest. (It's been many years since I've seen the Smithsonian's but they're comparable.) I live thousands of miles away but fortunately my brother lives in Houston and a local library has their Masterpieces of the Mineral World book.

That is really gorgeous; thanks for linking to it.
My own collection needs dusting, now that I look at it...

"But it doesn't say anywhere in the employee handbook that I can't bring uranium into the office..." (true conversation with head of HR...)

Holy shit these are gorgeous. Thanks, Think_Long. Being told I'm on "page 8 of 147" has never felt so good.

Thank you very much! FYI, anyone in my fair borough of Sydney should check out the museum - they have a terrific minerals collection - much of it donated from one mammoth private collection. Good stuff. I've killed a few hours there.
