"Explore your relationship with art as you guide bubsy through a realistic recreation of the James Turrell Retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. After you have played Bubsy3d and understand art a little better, Arcane Kids encourages you to go visit an art museum in your area and quit video games." This made me realize there's a part of me that is susceptible to nostalgia for pages in comic sans that ask you to install a plugin.

How about crappiest video game ever? I don't even understand why they wanted to recreate this.

Well, this apparently crappy game won't load for me in Chrome, but I happened to visit the James Turrell Retrospective this past weekend and I can tell you that it is not crappy at all.
It's expensive, sure. Standing in "Breathing Light" for eight minutes was worth the $27. All the other great stuff is free!

Whoa! This game is totally a trip! The museum is just the beginning. Totally worth the 5 minutes to just play through the whole thing. Now I understand art a little better.
Someone please find the overlap between this and ulillillia/Nick Smith's Bubsy 3D videos that I am 100% sure exists and yet cannot find any trace of.
I thought of ulillillia too when I saw this!

I hope this isn't the closest I'll ever get to actually seeing a Turrell installation in person. I really enjoyed this. There's Arcane Kids Paperrad-ish appropriation of Turrell. There's the nod to Ulillillia by choosing Bubsy as the vehicle. And it's an inspiring use of Unity to top it all off. This really takes the cake.

So yeah two days ago I was in Los Angeles, taking an epic bus ride from Burbank to Santa Monica to ditch the convention I was there for in favor of walking around on the beach.
On the way there, I passed the LA County Museum of Art. There was a square full of lamp-posts of various sizes, arranged much as they are in this game. In actuality, they're all white, there are rather more of them then there were in this game, and they were oddly ethereal and magical. I was tempted to get off and explore them but damnit, I wanted some sand.
And now here I am back home in gloomy Seattle, guiding a hilariously hard-to-control low-poly cat through a bright red low-poly caricature of those lamps. And more.
I laughed my ass off when I got to the end of the museum and the ensuing segment. If this does not settle the matter of "games as Art" then nothing will. It touches upon Deep Matters in precisely the same ham-handedly "oblique" manner as a lot of gallery work does.
