Jorge Colombo has been creating daily portraits of New Yorkers for almost three years straight. While in the past they've tended towards the whimsical, after September 11th, they took on a different tone. [via media nugget]

Very interesting how he expresses a whole (albeit perhaps stereotypical) personality in such a simple drawing.

I love this. What a great project.

I've visited New York a few times, and I've seen more people carrying guitars on their backs than in any other city. Why is that?

New York is weird.

We have a large number of aspiring rockers in NYC, and we don't have cars to carry our guitars around in.

And I don't look weird in that picture, just a little insouciant. You think the shoes are too much?

Jorge explains the process a bit over at OpenLetters.

i have always wondered if Jorge gets stalkers...people hanging around street corners in the east village trying to look interesting. I know when i was in NYC i tried. The world is definately an interesting place if you can ignore the teeming masses and look at people seperately.

Jorge is a pretty cool guy; he was at the apartment for my roommate's Thanksgiving dinner. I gather he's observant and cynical enough not to be persuaded by an individual's overt attempts to be photographed or illustrated. However, there are features in the Times and one of the tabloids that show photographs of people who represent current trends in clothes and style; individuals have been known to campaign and parade in an attempt to be included in those photograph galleries.
