Enough games to keep you occupied until 2015

freeindiegam.es has posted a bunch of "Best of 2013" lists for your enjoyment. Some of the games can be played in your browser (HTML5/Flash/Unity); others require a download—but they're all free! (And indie!)
Categories include Action, Exploration, Roguelike-Likes, Horror, Sex (mildly NSFW), Puzzle Games, Interactive Fiction, Twine (those hypertext-fiction / choose-your-own-adventure games that all the kids are into), Ensemble / Vignette Games, and ??? (weird, inexplicable, and experimental).
There are also lists of personal favorites from contributors Noyb, Terry (yes, that one), Stephen, Porpentine, and Michael.

Horsemaster is INTENSE. I won a competition on the second try. But at what cost?

Huh, I didn't know you could fail Horsemaster. I won on my first playthrough and it seemed like I was doing all the wrong things and falling apart at the seams.
Also, I'm surprised Porpentine's list isn't 100% thecatamites, since that's kind of dominated her RPS column lately.

Hm, it might have to do with my browser, as Chrome works fine with it. I first tried Waterfox, a 64-bit variant of Firefox, might explain it?

Porpentine chose as her #1 favorite Room Of 1000 Snakes. I knew I liked her for some reason. Hey, and she also likes Candy Box!

Is Heroes of Sokoban not loading for anyone else? I tried turning off Ad Block, but no cigar.

So, Reveal, what exactly is this about?
Have you played it yet? Because that question could still apply.
It's a short art game. I wasn't impressed.

Yes, I was likewise underwhelmed after being initially intrigued by the plethora of women's magazine covers. Since it's considered so highly by the site I'd be interested to know if anyone reading similarly rates it and why.
Also, what is twine as a game genre? Is it an engine of some sort?

Yep—Twine is an engine for building text-based browser games of the choose-your-own-adventure variety.

Nested is amazing.
Seconded. Everyone, you should spend a few minutes exploring it. Find random people and look at their thoughts and memories. Then try to find a dog and look at its thoughts. Then do it for antelope or similar animals. Then for predators. Then do it for a bear. Then do it for the gas beings hanging out in nebulae. Then....

oh sweet jesus why did i download jelly no puzzle
jelly no puzzle is the worst / best puzzle game I've ever played. Over and over, it gives you a new screen and it not only looks impossible at first glance, but the second thing you do is do a little proof in your head that, yes, it is impossible. And then you solve it and feel like a fool / genius.

I'm ambivalent about SUPER HOT being listed under action instead of puzzle, but it's great, whatever it is.
