A bunch of artists and designers were sent a small Flash file and told to change whatever they wanted, and send back the results. You get to see the mutations.

Just got through digging through a bunch more of the artists, and some of them did some gorgeous interpretations. Neat that the window is large enough you can grab a screenshot and have a pretty new desktop image in a few seconds.
Kind of wish they'd link the source files so we could see what was done to the original idea. Would be good for people learning.

Well, it's not quite as cutting edge as this but the collaborative meme has been going on over at the gridcosm for about 4 years now. Anyone can join in.

i'd like to get a copy of the original flash file and play with it myself. Where can one find it? Or is it just for the uber-hip design world elite?

The creator has an email address at the bottom of the site. I'm sure if you dropped him a line and asked if you could have a copy of the source, he wouldn't mind sharing it with you. Besides, perhaps you'll come up with something cool for his gallery.

If you go here, #007: flower is practically the same effect with simpler basic shapes, it's a downloadable .zip of about 6K. Saves you and Geoff some emails.
