Man, had a visceral recoil aversion reaction to that first kid dancing barefoot.

Splinters errday.

Sorry that's not house dancing, that's pure northern soul floor filling.

Kids dancing. I guess I was supposed to be surprised that they could dance because (according to the video description) they are from Japan? It was a cute video though!

I don't think that was the idea, no.

Cute + awesome. Starting a few years ago, there has been a push to teach hip hop dancing to all Japanese elementary school students. Their teachers are often expected to teach this, so there are a lot of elementary school teachers in Japan who themselves are taking dance classes in order to teach their kids.

Yeah, two years ago the Ministry of Education made martial arts and dance compulsory for junior high school students. The dance requirement consists of "interpretive/original dance", "folk dance" (and here we're not talking traditional Japanese dancing, but square-dancing and the like), and "modern rhythmical dance". Modern rhythmical dance is generally taken to mean various forms of hip-hop dance.

Oh cool, bugbread and zardoz - I didn't know that! Dancing has always been the most fun exercise option to me; wish our kids in the States had similar classes available to them. (I'm sure some do, just not universally across the U.S.)

Martial arts seems like it would be great for many reasons, too, like self-defense, developing good balance and building core strength.
