Announced at the end of June, Emojli was billed as "the emoji-only network." One source called it worse than Yo. It launched yesterday with 70,000 names registered. The creators of the app π Tom Scott (previously on Metafilter) and π Matt Gray (who shows up frequently on Tom's YouTube channel) presented a talk: "Emojli: Behind the Scenes and Why You Should Never Build An App."

Most everything Tom does is aimed at celebrity. It's really interesting just how good he is at it (his track record of creative, fully-implemented stunts is amazing), and how hard it is for him to make any headway (he's not that well known, even now).

This is far too expressive. They should take a page out of Twitter's book and limit the number of emoji per message. 140 characters = approximately 28 words = 0.028 pictures. So it seems like a good limit would be about 36 messages per emoji.

Emojis are (ideally) not rendered as embedded graphics, but as characters from a font with emoji glyphs at relevant Unicode character points.
Each of your devices is rendering the emoji with the fonts they have installed. One has a black and white emoji font, the other's is in color. You can see how different systems/platforms render emoji at Emojipedia.

Emojis interact weirdly with search. If you search for one on Google or Twitter there are no results, but as you paste it into the search box, they suggest related searches.

Maybe he just needs the right partner. Tom and Matt have a good chemistry in a performance mode, and I could see them doing some kind of show together and doing pretty well in either an audio or video format. They seem to have the right 'shapes' and look for a performance duo. It sounds weird, and never realized it until just now, but hear me out. Ever notice the frequency of duos that are comprised of one dark haired one who is a bit heavier and often (but not always) taller, and the other thinner and also blonde? Offhand I can think of Penn and Teller, Fry and Laurie, Mitchell and Webb, Jay and Silent Bob, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, French and Saunders, Will Ferrel and John C. Riley, and even Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher of the Found Footage Festival, and I'm sure there's a lot more, but you see my point. For some weird reason, that combination appears to have some sort of benefit. If it were just about size, or just about hair color, that's one thing, but the prevalence of duos with both characteristics together is just kind of strange.
