CBS could not give a fart

Want to hear Martellus Bennett's thoughts about fonts, including bold? Curious to see an impression of Regis Philbin doing an impression of Nicholas Cage eating too hot soup in Bangkok Dangerous? Ever wanted to find out what would happen when Adam "Not A Great Fit For Guest Host of the Late Late Show" Pally acted as guest host of the Late Late Show? During a snow storm? In front of no studio audience? With no laugh track but the muffled responses of the crew, who apparently hate him? With his trusted companion, Ben Schwartz, at his side, Adam Pally made a nearly unimaginable, nearly incomprehensible, at least partially unintentionally brilliant and absurd hour-long mockery of the late show format. Watch it all.

Here is CBS's page about the show. Go here if you just want to see some short clips, though the episode really deserves being viewed in its entirely.

Here is an interview with Vulture, where Adam Pally provides (a small amount of) insight into how it all went down.

Previously,The Late Late Show said goodbye to Craig Ferguson. Adam Pally is one of a string of guest hosts filling in until James Corden shows up.

I really enjoyed watching this, though cringed through his entire interview with the football player. Give him a sec to answer! Don't step on his response. The Beth Stern section was surprisingly great--she clearly knows how to help someone else shine, and her cat stories were adorable. I love Adam Pally though and would one hundred percent watch him do this every night.

Once you've lost the crew, give up. (source: crew member)

The Late Late Show said goodbye to Craig Ferguson...

And, now, he's hosting a fairly lame game show. Though, he is the best thing about it.

Yay! I'm enjoying this.

Random thoughts:

Trying to improv with satellite delay is apparently near impossible.

I miss Happy Endings.

What happened to Ben Gibbard's brain that it can no longer invent melodies?

"My nickname in the industry is .8" makes me laugh but also makes me sad, because Happy Endings ended too soon! This is a hot mess and I love it.

Peter Prentice and Jean-Ralphio Saperstein hosting? What could go wrong?

I don't really get this, as it seems they're laughing pretty hard at his freewheelin' ridiculousness. Lorde knows I sure am! Thanks for the post!

edit: oh I get it, he says the teleprompter dude hates him, which I feel like is a joke about the improvness of the show?

I don't really believe the crew hate him, but Pally becomes pretty adamant towards the end that they do, in fact, hate him.

Fans of Ben Schwartz should check out the one-off comedy special he did for Showtime awhile back in which he drafted some of his House of Lies co-stars (Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, Josh Lawson) into doing live improv along with him and his fellow UCB alums.

My favorite part of this was when, during the football player interview, both Pally and Schwartz drink from their mugs at the same time. Schwartz points it out with a smile and Pally just nods like, "Yeah that dumb thing just happened."

That was really funny. I would watch this show, totally. The repartee between Pally and Ben Schwartz was really great. Pally's hatred of CBS reminded me (fondly) of Letterman mocking the NBC pinheads.

He caught the pen at the end, as his sign off!

Come on out. Host the show. By the way, all the guests have canceled because of the weather or because they didn't know who you were. Either way, we're not watching. So do what you like, we won't bring you back to do this again.

P.S. Please provide your own suit.

Good for them for understanding *exactly* what this moment was and using it appropriately.

Well yeah, how could Craig Ferguson not be the best thing about a game show called Celebrity Name Game?

The worst part of it for me now is the bus ads. I'm at a red light on my way to work and there's the bus with the goofball "zany fun! (tm)" typography and bright colors. And there's Craig Ferguson's face looking at me, and his eyes are screaming at me, like that guy in the alien nest... kill me... please kill me.

Just like they kept joking, I have no idea who these folks are, but that was enjoyable. The segment where he got the tattoo seems to have been crudely hacked out for some reason, but not multiple references to it. Or was that itself the joke? If it really was in there at some point I am curious.

The tattoo scene is in the CBS.com set of video highlights (in the second link), oddly enough.

Thank you, muddgirl.
Videos on that page don't seem to want to load for me right now but will check it out later.

In my experience, their shows at UCB in LA are some of the toughest tickets around.

That's true. Schwartz is currently behind some of the most popular UCB shows. Pally doesn't have as many regular shows, but they're in Hot Sauce together and that's always a tough one to nab tickets for.

Well, I gotta say that I appreciated the "not giving a fart" 'tude of Pally and Schwartz. It was surprisingly charming. It's very weird that they only gave the guy one show from the getgo, but uh...I guess this is why.

I dunno, since I found out about this guest host gig thing (and more specifically that they're putting the videos online so I don't have to be up for it), I tried watching Sean Hayes the last two nights. I liked his opening dance number on night one but freaking turned off the video when he started screeching "Sunrise, Sunset" on night two. I may give other folks a chance later on, though....

I miss Craigyferg.

I miss Happy Endings.

Adam Pally w/beard looks a lot like Travis McElroy.

Omg I would watch this if it were a show. I would watch it so hard. The pen catch at the end was beautiful.

In my imagination, this show is picked up and Pally continues to use the pen catch as his sign off.

In the early years of the show, he misses now and then, but then the misses become less and less frequent as he hones his skill day in and day out. He gets weirdly good at it, to the point where Ben Schwartz starts hurling it toward him with greater and greater speed, trying to get him to fuck it up (or perhaps to wound him on TV!). People start to tape the show and make gifs of Pally's unlikely-but-real ninja-like reflexes.

They appear to have removed it! I enjoyed it so much, I was going to watch it again, and there is just an empty space. Sad panda!
