I think these were the murders that inspired the movie, The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

This has been floating out there for a short bit here and an arguably lesser work here. And yes this was the basis for the 1976 movie and meta-basis for the 2014 slasher movie of the same name (but not a reboot) on Netflix. I recommend the first book highly.
