"The idea is that Hannibal is always eating people, regardless of what he’s feeding you. So I wanted it to look like something that could be lamb’s tongue but probably was a people tongue. Lambs’ tongues are so homely, and once you cook them they just look creepy and unappetizing, and what I want more than anything is for the food to look so delicious that you want to reach into the screen and try it, even though you know it’s people. It’s the personification of Hannibal. He’s the Devil. Why do you like him? Why do you want to get to know him? Why do you want to eat these tongues? They’re people!"

Although I once made a chocolate & blood ice cream based on the Nordic Food Lab's work and the results were underwhelming. It mostly tasted like salted chocolate ice cream that was just a bit too salty, which also prevented the ice cream from hardening properly, staying at a soft-serve consistency.

I like her anecdotes about the vegan/vegetarian raw meat substitutes. There's that creepiness in knowing it's not what it looks like, but still sort of expecting it to be that thing you don't really want to eat. I'm not even vegan, and I'm not sure I could bring myself to eat something that looks exactly like raw meat. Er, unless it's tartare, I guess.

I always thought the concept of Hufu was funny, in an incredibly dark and unsettling way. The Daily Show said their slogan should be "It's Who's For Dinner."

It is straight up hilarious that 72,000 people (and counting) have signed a petition on Change.org to petition NBC to save hannibal.

I almost did an fpp about this, because I think it's interesting even if you don't watch Hannibal but are a fan of TV industry crap in general, but I decided to restrain myself so here:

Hannibal is actually in a fairly unique situation, in that it is an international coproduction of which NBC was a partner, along with a French production company and several broadcasters worldwide. NBC chipped in a relatively small amount of money to secure the US broadcast rights and were able to exercise a limited amount of control over content (mostly related to censoring nudity), but it is not and never was just 'an NBC show'; it airs internationally as both a Gaumont original production and as an AXN original production, because they both paid for it to be produced as well as NBC.

What that means is that NBC actually CAN'T cancel Hannibal. They have pulled their cofunding and will no longer air the show, and if no one else picks it up then it won't continue because the other international cofunders can't financially support it alone, but that's not quite the same as when a 'normal' network show is cancelled.

So while NBC will never pick it back up, there is actually a very good chance that someone else could save it by becoming the new American cofunder. It's a huge bargain because of the coproduction model, and - and this is the reason that petition has so many signatures - it has a lot of very devoted fans who would follow it to a new home. The petition is less for NBC itself, and more a way of demonstrating that while it will never pull down broadcast TV numbers, it is still a desirable property for a more niche channel or streaming service to pick up.

Real cannibalism: bad.

Cannibalism strikes me as a highly efficient way to save a whole bunch of hassle. I mean obviously you shouldn't be killing people just to eat them (though, given we do exactly that to cows and sheeps and chickenses and fish, you kind of wonder why not), but the amount of fucking-around that happens when somebody dies is to my mind extremely wasteful. I guess there is the risk of brain parasites or human disease X when you don't cook a person properly, but just hollowing out a body and filling it with formaldehyde and throwing it in the ground in a lacquered box and throwing a bunch of dirt on it and then digging it up and moving it so that a new apartment block can be installed on prime real estate seems like a gross squandering of 60-90 years of shoulder massages, Pop Tarts and denim.

No Mads as usual as far as I know, but Hugh Dancy and Richard Armitage are there. Bryan is wearing a fucking incredible Star Wars jacket that is presumably made from his childhood bedsheets or something.

Hugh has short hair and I'm upset but that damn jacket.

Apparently Thomas Harris has seen the show! And loves what they've done with his characters! fuller also said Season Four might work better at film length....
posted by The Whelk at 12:12 PM on July 11, 2015

That Harris bit is the standard answer when they get asked if Harris has seen/likes the show. I hope it's true. I really wonder what he makes of S3, given what chunks of the books it's pulling from and the, uh, somewhat fraught circumstances of the writing of the third and fourth books. Pity about the whole media-recluse thing, but whatever makes him happy!

I have no cite on this beyond the EW recap of the panel but: "Fuller says that Netflix passed and Amazon wanted to go back into production too early"

GODDAMMIT, AMAZON. YOU DON'T RUSH THE COOK.

The more heartening rest of the quote: "Hugh and Mads are very committed to the show and would love to continue with the show, so the way this season ends, there may be an opportunity for a little break and hopefully we’ll find a way to bring Mads and Hugh back to you."

Stuff Hugh said backs that up and there's literally no reason to believe they're lying. If Fuller's happy with what they're able to do, I'm completely up for it, whatever form it takes.
posted by sparkletone at 6:25 PM on July 11, 2015

Not gonna quote too much of the rest though I'll probably try to remember to post a video link once I have a decent one. Just stuff we knew about the general shape of the rest of the season... And that Richard Armitage is, like, naked. A lot. Good news for fans of the male form, as it were.
posted by sparkletone at 6:27 PM on July 11, 2015

I lied. I really, really, really want to quote this bit here now (since it'll be a while before I can quote it on Fanfare):
Fuller says he wanted to keep the promise of not telling rape stories in Dolarhyde’s tale: “It became more about the assault on the family unit than the woman in the family unit … It just felt like we listened very carefully to our audience and we know who our audience is. And I think you should only do a rape story when you can dedicate a lot of real estate to exploring exactly what sort of violation that means for everybody involved in the situation. So often on television, they don’t, and it makes it thin and shallow and lazy,” he said to huge cheers from the crowd. “We minimized a bit and we didn’t really pronounce that too much. It’s there if you want to see if, but I didn’t want to see it myself.”
The show has quite fairly (even if I disagree) at times received criticism about representation and various other issues. But they've stuck so well to this one and hearing that going into this last part is such a stand-on-my-desk-and-OH-CAPTAIN-MY-CAPTAIN[1] thing. They've done so well at taking so many things out of highly-problematic Hannibal (the novel) and making it work, but I still kinda felt unsure about Mr. Dolarhyde. They've indicated elsewhere that they don't cross the i's and dot the t's[2] on Francis' first murder being the one in the pilot because there wasn't screen time to do it... They just don't discount it either.

WAY READY FOR THIS... Just... Way no ready for this coming episode. Mason pls. Why. If I wanted kinky bondage GIFs, I'd look at my cough other tumblr account.

[1] - I fucking hate that movie on so many levels but it is useful as shorthand for a certain kind of unwieldy devotion.
