Happy National Dog Day! Here are NDD's 20 ways to celebrate this, the finest of all holidays. For the next ~30 hours, you can post a photo of your pup to the National Dog Day Facebook page (or any other social media site) with the hashtags #NationalDogDay and #DogDayCutestDog to enter them into a quest for the title of Cutest Dog... IN THE WORLD.
If you're more of an onlooker than a participant, you can coo over these newly adopted puppies1 on their freedom rides: one, two, three, four... take a leisurely scroll through a selection of phenomenally photogenic pups whose guardians are Guardian readers... or take a look at some of the cute, single puppies in your area.

We are dog-sitting this week, and since I saw on my phone that it is National Dog Day as I brushed my teeth, I refrained from telling off our "guest" when I took her outside to pee on my lawn at 6:05 AM.

I mean, ALL dogs are cute of course but LOOK AT THIS FACE and she's got a little backpack and bandanna and everything!
Moe is pretty much exuberance in a furry wrapper. Life is good because she's sitting right here next to me as I type this, and as soon as I hit post I'm going to go snuggle the heck out of that dog.

I wish I had seen this a bit earlier so I could say that where I am, it's National Dog Day afternoon, but as it is, I'm writing from the far less dramatic National Dog Day evening.
Here's our daahg. Her name is Sky, she's a rescue, and a smartypants, and the apple of her daddy's eye, and we found out recently via doggy DNA testing that she's half straight Siberian Husky and half a bunch of other dogetypes. So a Sibermutt, or a Mutsky. #definitelythecutest

Kenda came from a local humane society; she's (probably) a Border Collie/Something Sneaky mix. She's super smart, and she likes to hike and ride in my sidecar with me.
Maeby was a lost and very hungry bear-hunting dog when I found her deep in the backcountry of the Smokies. She's now a therapy dog who loves working with kids who have special needs. And a complete goofball.
Dogs are the best.

Thought I'd share a picture of my first dog, too, since she inspired my Metafilter username. I adopted Bandit as a puppy when I was a junior in college, and she was my constant through so much - I went through 6 moves in 3 states, 2 layoffs (thanks Enron!), 1 major career shift, 2 grad school degrees, the death of a parent, the breakup of my first relationship, the beginning of the best relationship of my life, and so many happy camping trips, road trips, hiking paths, holidays, and everything else with that dog.
And that frisbee in the picture? Bandit loved that frisbee. No matter what else was going on in life, so long as we had somewhere that we could go play with that frisbee, all was well with the world.
Dogs are the best. Love you forever, Dingo-butt.

My best buddy Russell had a good walk on a trail this morning, and he just got home from his bath with a bandana that says "woof ruff." I should think of some ways the rest of his Dog Day can be awesome.

OMG, Wolfdog, your doggie looks like the twin brother of my late lamented Lollie (named Lollypop by my not-yet-ex-wife but I shortened because the was half BlackLab and half Collie)
Trigger warning, sad story: First, my heart disease keeps me from walking her then my wife leaves and doesn't take her (but you can imagine which of them I liked better then), so a wonderful neighbor takes over taking Lollie out and I end up giving her to her when I have to move away, but then I learn before I can come back for a first visit that she (the dog) has died of kidney failure - or a broken heart? (Sorry, no pics)
Much more recently, I semi-literally inherited my first cat ever from a neighbor who died of cancer. She's an independent puss who he called KittyCat and I shortened to KitCat because favorite candy bar. Not a close relationship - KC tried sleeping at the foot of my bed and decided herself to stay outside, and I got to avoid being seen as a 'cat person' (except at stores where I buy Meow Mix - lucky that cat has cheap tastes).
But still, Cat Memes have taken over the internet, leaving only the too-often-ridiculed Doge (also-too-often pictured stuck somewhere) and Pun Dog (which does combine two of my favorite things). And then, some right wing asshats with bad taste in sci-fi hijack the word "Puppies" for their hate-based anti-literature campaign. We dog lovers can't catch a break. So may I propose just celebrating ALL the Dog Days?

Wow. DingoMutt, are you me? I too had a very special mutt (named Ada) that I always called my dingo and she looked really similar (she's also my profile picture) and was also obsessed with fetching frisbee's but also balls, toys, sticks or anything else you could throw.

She's a Jack Russell Terrier and Beagle mix, and she's now 8 months old, and she's the cutest and sweetest and most friendly puppy in the whole wide world, and given the chance, she would show that she loves me back just as much as I love her by biting my face off and chewing it to bits.

I lack dogs in my life right now, sadly, and I'm not in a position to have one. My boyfriend lost his nearly a year ago and she was the best (old lady beagle-corgi-dachshund mutt who had a bunch of toys that where her "babies" and loved tater tots). He's talked about getting another this fall and I sometimes try to "help" by sending him links to dogs at our local animal shelter.
Photos of other people's dogs are good, too. I also know a dog walker who will sometimes bring his "clients" by. I need more dogs!

Seven the Superdog. He loved his costume and wore it every Halloween for years. I think he knew when he saw the costume he was going to get a lot of attention.

This is Benny the first day I brought him home and today.
In between, he has discovered carrots, learned that he is not a morning dog, put up with lots of bandanas, and gone on lots of CAR RIDES.
Adopting him was one of the best life choices I have ever made. When I did, I didn't know that in less than a year I'd be moving across the country and taking a crazy job that involved lots of travel. I'm still glad I did it, because having a dog has kept me sane, and it turns out that he is so fun and goofy and affectionate and lovable that people pretty much line up to dogsit him when I go away!

Aw, Poldo, I love those pictures of your 'dingo' =) Looks like she had the same 'not quiiiiiiite standing up' ears that Bandit did - and how funny that she was a frisbee (and other thrown items) hound, too!

I gave Figlet and Lindy rawhides today to celebrate, and myself a glass of wine.
Mr. Fig and I also decided today to add this little derpy lady to our pack, so if all goes well when she meets our dogs Monday, our family will be 1 dog bigger.
