Time Lapse Cicadas

Time Lapse Cicadas. Time Lapse Cicadas. Time Lapse Cicadas. And, finally, Time Lapse Cicadas (last is Globe & Mail video with popup cicada factoids).
I was expecting a 17-year video. Guess they aren't done with that one yet.

I once put a whole pile of cicada husks in my sister's bed. This was a bad idea I have been paying for ever since.

Is this where I come in to say how much I hate the damnable noise that they make?
All the noise noise noise noise!

God I love this!
Cicadas are awesome. And their husks make perfect monsters to attack an outpost of Stormtroopers.

The non-experienced probably can't grasp the 'noise'.
I was driving across I80, pulled into a motel parking lot and remember looking around as I got out of the car for the construction site, I mean really walking around to see what in this small town would have dozens of jackhammers going constantly. It's not exactly a jackhammer sound but it'd take a small orchestra of hammers and saws to duplicate.

I've never been hit on the head by a cicada, so consider me a beginner.

Back in college my favorite winter hat was a conic microfiber cap adorned with close to 50 husks.. A big hit at soccer games, for some reason.

Cicadas? Husks? Time lapse? Pass.
Sorry, they really gross me out.

I remember being out in the woods after the last big hatch here. What is worse than the noise is the ever-present rotting smell of cicada bodies everywhere. The birds and whatever else eats them can't keep up.

I used to live in the south. During a previous hatch, I was driving along the highway at speed with the air thundering through the open windows, and realized I could hear the cicadas even over that hurricane. I also vividly remember the weird, sort-of-metallic smell that pervaded the entire outdoors. I don't miss either of those experiences.

I wonder what it was like before people knew about cicadas... Like, yeah the trees are screaming, they do that every year.

I love the 17 year cicadas. I love the crazy noise, I love the beautiful empty shells everywhere, I love the clumsy things flying around. It's this amazing surge of *life* out of the ground.

Or it could be the other way around - after all, cicadas have been here longer.
