"Mascots don't die, they just hang in a closet."

First there was regional theatre, dog shows, and folk music. Now, filmmaker Christopher Guest tackles sports mascots in his latest film, Mascots. The first trailer has been released and the film, which stars the full stable of regulars chasing a Golden Fluffy Award, will premiere on Netflix on October 13th.
Wait, IMDB says Guest is playing Corky St Clair? And he does look an awful lot like him in that crowd shot....

I'm honestly a little meh on some of the gags in the trailer, but I could watch Parker Posey read a cereal box and be perfectly content.

dismas: Yes - Guest is reprising his Corky St. Clair persona (not sure if he's bringing the "My Dinner with Andre" action figures).
gusandrews: If you're excited about Chris O'Dowd in a Guest joint, you may want to check out the short-lived HBO series "Family Tree" (spoiler: it's good, not great, to my recollection... but I probably need to re-watch it).

I am one of the biggest Christopher Guest fans in Boston and the general Boston area but there has been a sort of law of diminishing returns thing going on, I have to admit.

The subjects Guest has been portraying have been funny because they're kind of already open to ridicule. This movie looks the most appealing to me because mascots are the most ridiculous.

Oh, this is GREAT news!
Best in Show and Waiting For Guffman are pure gems and are both on my "If I'm flipping through the channels and find it, then I'm going to stay and watch the whole thing" list.

In other mascot-related news, Kingsley, the David Shrigley-designed Partick Thistle mascot has someone new inside the costume this season.

I was just telling one of the kids about the mascot biz last week!
When I was growing up in Minnesota I worked with a guy who wanted to be the mascot for the new NBA franchise there, the Timberwolves. Mark had been a college gymnast and was still in good shape. He didn't get the job, which was a disappointment to all of us (because we had planned to soak him for free stuff and favors -- do you know any pizza delivery guys? -- but also because we liked him). But then he got a short-term gig as the mascot for the 1990 Olympic Festival as a friendly snowman named Willie Winone. (Image of plush toy here looks exactly like the unbearably-hot-for-July costume that Mark wore.)
Apparently "Winone" was pronounced "win one" but we all said it like he was some pseudo-Italian "win-OH-knee" and it made him cranky. Sorry, Mark!

I guess an Irish guy counts towards diversity in the world of mascots, huh?
I do love me some Christopher Guest, Waiting for Guffman is in my top 10 of best movies of all time. But he really needs to get out and meet some new people.
