How well do you know your Halloween animals? Some animals have a sinister reputation this time of year. Amateurs. We got yer vortex of evil right here:
- A black kitty-cat who will probably do something unspeakable as soon as he's done playing in his sunbeam.
- Baby bats swaddled in sin.
- Fluffy burrowing owl chicks? More like fluffy burrowing-into-your-skull owl chicks.
- Teeny tiny fuzzy jumping spider of doom.
- The most terrifying wolf pack ever known to humankind.
Bonus: baby Cthulhu and hiccuping wolf pup (previously).

This picture is all I could think of when watching that bat video.

No MetaFilter thread with reference to bats is complete without Lil' Drac!

I guess I just always figured that this is the darkest time of year, and these are all children of the night.

My favorite "cute bat" comment came from someone who'd noted that bats' wings are really just membranes stretched between elongated fingers, so bat flight is really powered by jazz hands.

I gave up on question 4. I refuse to believe drinking whiskey is the wrong answer.

I got halfway through the quiz and got redirected to a "claim your prize!" page.
The kitty trying to catch the sunlight made up for it, though.

Rats, sorry about that, Mister Moofoo. I didn't see that when I went through the quiz. Have contacted the mods. Here's another kitten for your troubles.

Mod note: Hrm, nixed that first link out of an abundance of caution. Carry on!

For years a family of burrowing owls raised babies in the storm drain on our street. You'd walk up our driveway and out of the corner of your eye you'd catch a glimpse of several sets of yellow eyes staring at you from the drain. But when you looked directly they'd be gone. Naturally we never told anyone this ahead of time and denied everything when they asked. "You been drinking?" we'd ask. "You ever read that book It?"
Good times.

That owl video is a nice demonstration of near and far.
Now I am NEAR!
*runs away*
Now I am FAR!
Grover would approve.

I cannot see burrow owls without thinking about the Dead Milkmen: "Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick, kid, don't you know that a burrow owl lives in a hole in the ground?"
And they're really really cute.
