I was kind of hoping to see Donald Sutherland cut in at the end.

I saw this in passing on twitter yesterday and thought "boy I hope someone posts this to MetaFilter" and here we are. You're doing important work, bondcliff.

Well dang. I ALWAYS wondered who was making those sounds on the other end of the line. Thanks for clearing up the mystery for me.

I was trying to think of what this made me think of, and I guess it's kind of Matrixy or Terminatorish. Creeeeeepy. I mean, I totally welcome our operatic robot overlords.

From the tweet I saw earlier about this, tenors match foghorns nicely.

For some reason this reminded me of D'Arcy Carden's performance in The Good Place.

Obviously depends where you are - I have older family in rural parts of the Midwest who are still on dial-up. But I would guess that the cut-off for most people is probably around my younger brother's age, so the 23-25 range. I'm a few years older, and I had dial-up, but his internet activity started around 2004 and we had broadband by then. Apparently 56% of the internet had shifted to broadband by 2005. My parents were early adopters on tech, so we'd gotten it a little earlier, but I think that's probably a safe guess.

I managed to go from 300bps to 2400bps to university dormitory ethernet, and came out into the dot-com booble in time for stuff like ricochet modems and ADSL. So I actually only tangentially remember these handshakes.
So really, you're allowed over there, and my lawn is over here. Clear?

Reminds me of the "Dark Knight" portion of Fatal Farm's unused MTV Movie Awards spoofs. (starts at 1:17, but you should watch the whole thing.)
