One of my all time favorite poets. This was my introduction to her: She Had Some Horses Bonus: Joy reads the poem

This is pretty great. Anchorage was the first poem of hers I read, and itโ€™s an absolute gut punch.

I have been enjoying learning about her today. I thought NPRs phrasing about the appointment was interesting and clearly deliberate.
Harjo will represent both her Indigenous culture and those of the United States of America when she succeeds Tracy K. Smith as the country's 23rd poet laureate

What a fabulous choice!

I ... don't quite see how this could have happened. In these times. But I'm grateful.

The United States Poet Laureate is appointed by the Librarian of Congress. The incumbent Librarian is Carla Hayden, the first woman and first African American to hold the post. Hayden was nominated by Obama in the distant past of Feb 2016.

WONDERFUL news. One of the most stalwart, dedicated, prolific poets we have. I can't wait to see how she will hold the post. She is kind (I was lucky to meet her once, & to study in a class with her) but steady & unflinching in her convictions about both politics & craft. Cause to smile today!
