The Global Haiku Project

From Apartment Therapy: When you contribute to the Global Haiku Project, you start by sharing your first name. Then, you write the first line of your own, brand-new haiku.

After that, you’re given the first line of someone else’s haiku and asked to write a second line.

Finally, you add the third line to another poem that two people have already begun.

If you leave your email address, you’ll be emailed when your first two poems are completed.

Browse the gallery of completed haiku for inspiration and to see what happens when three strangers in different moods write a poem together.

Highly structured poetry time? Here's a villanelle.

Answering Machine

I lie alone without your body next to mine.
Your replayed voice clicks off but still I stay
and hope to catch an echo from the silent line.

Oh that our fingers could but intertwine.
No, you’re too far – two thousand miles away.
I lie alone without your body next to mine.

The sunset’s mountain dance, portent divine,
that grace will not reach you. Alone I pray
and hope to catch an echo from the silent line.

Like streets that fog made strange, my thoughts malign
leave me adrift, the truth itself astray.
I lie alone without your body next to mine.

On starless nights, gloom dank and doubt combine.
I quaver then and all my fears survey
and hope to catch an echo from the silent line

Words, words alone must then my love confine.
I trace your absent form in verses fey.
I lie alone without your body next to mine
and hope to catch an echo from the silent line.

Fun! It would be nice to be able to view the ones you participate in without having to provide an email addrees.

The 5-7-5 syllabic count we non-Japanese use in haiku makes no sense. But don't let this contrarian pedantry interfere with having fun making poetry!

My favorite so far from the gallery:

When things fall apart
I think about my mother

To follow up from kozad's excellent link (and hoping all will forgive a self-link), I wrote about the 5-7-5 thing at my blog back in 2008: The Japanese ask us to knock it off. Nevertheless, have fun as you will.
