I jokingly swung a chef's knife at a bluebottle once. I managed to catch it between thorax and abdomen: the front half just continued buzzing round the kitchen.

Insects truly are nature's robots, and they will inherit the earth... once they get that scaling-up problem solved, of course.

yikes that was very upsetting! I know it's just bugs, but to my dear heart it would be the same as seeing just the front half of a cat dragging itself around
