“The Obtainium ideal is to find useful and valued material for free.” Here’s a very new resource for low-cost or no-cost stuff of all kinds. It’s a breath of fresh air for those of us compulsive craftfolk who are frustrated with the upscale, hipsterish tone of the current DIY resurgence. Most posters are SF based, but they’d like to broaden their horizons.
Wasn't this site started by Burners looking for crap for their camp?

Whoever invented this site, may the Magical Overlord pay fealty to him or her - free fog juice? Dude. And so the death of capital begins... danko for the link, Fenriss!

oh.. you don't like readymade??? i really quite enjoy their magazine. decent writing, fun projects.
plus my co-workers (i guess, hipster-types themselves) had fun flipping through it and saying "oh, man! that's mike! what's he doing in here?". of course, those bastards stole my grooves magazine so, uh, i don't really trust them with printed material anymore.
oh, btw, good link. i hadn't heard of these folks, and i'm sure they'll have goodies (crosses fingers -- hopes for radio antenna.)

cool site - already posted two links - now as the proverbial internet hicks say - the "proof is in the pudding" - any chance it can match the cultish fanaticism of craigslist?

Coincidence. Was just looking at this on Friday, my face glum at the San Franciscocentrism of it. Wake me up when it's a crazyhuge fad with participants north of the border, will you?

I like readymade! C'mon, it isn't hipsterish unless it has iMac and Beetle ads.

To be fair, I don't exactly *dis*like Readymade. It does have a lot of clever ideas, and I'll probably even buy a subscription. I just wish it was a little... grungier? Everyone is so cute and cheerful (not grumpy and sweaty, like I get when I build things) and there's this general feel of pseudo-70's kitschiness that just make me roll my eyes half of the time.

Yep, mostly what Fstop said: It was started by Burners who either had stuff that others could use or those in need of stuff. I think it's a great idea, personally.
Now, about the SFcentrism, it's there for everyone to use. Start using it in YOUR locality. Tell your friends about it. MAKE it work for you. No need to whine really. Everything has to start somewhere, right? :-)
