the crows and their tef

tef likes to feed the crows in the park. tef likes to take pictures of the crows, which they tolerate as long as they're getting fed. Here is a crow with a peanut; scratching; being grumpy; wet; with two peanuts; being fluffy; unwrapping a peanut; in mid-nom; demanding a peanut; nictitating; in the last of the sunlight; purring; on a post; being legion; close by; incoming.
This post was deleted for the following reason: The crows are awesome but it sounds like the photographer is grieving a very fresh loss and the attention MetaFilter is bringing him is intrusive. Maybe repost in a month? -- Eyebrows McGee

They’re given peanuts, so they tolerate being photographed; it’s simple caws and effect.

Aww! Tef is a friend of mine, and I'm so glad they're back out taking pictures of crows. The pictures have always been delightful, and it's so nice that other people can enjoy them too.

You have a real talon for this kind of thing. I'm just a rook-ie...

Your puns are nothing to crow about.
I love these photos. I've been trying to find more motivation to go for daily walks, a la another recent post, and this might be just what I need. Thanks!

Re: purring
People described one particular sound in a variety of ways. Some called it clicking, other knocking, some described as the sound Predator makes. I suspect you’ll know it as the rattle call. By any name you wish you describe it, what does it mean?posted by y2karl at 5:28 AM on January 19, 2021
Most scientists describe it as the “rattle call” (for those who haven’t heard it, it really does sound like the rattling growl of the predator from the 1987 movie). Unfortunately, we don’t know what it means. There is evidence that only female crows utter this sound.

Whenever I visit England I love photographing the many corvids there. Such great birds, I will definitely be following this man.

tef does have a pretty amazing camera setup, so even if the crows aren't too close, they end up in crow eye selfies.

they never let me get close enough for pictures like that

I am both fascinated by and slightly scared of most corvids, but these pictures were great! We've got ravens where I live, which are HUGE. When I worked at a coffeeshop and had to take the trash out, there would always be one raven standing watch on the lid of the dumpster, while it's buddies were inside snacking. I'd always sing a little song that went"please don't peck my eyes out, here's some fresh trash for you" to let them know I was a friend and please don't dive bomb me. It seemed to work, but maybe peanuts would have been even more effective!

I can't see any of these because the account holder has limited who can view their tweets. Sounds cute. :(

Given they protected their account due to too much attention, here's a post they did about befriending crows. And a Google image search for "tef crows" finds many exemplars. (I originally followed because programming is terrible but love the crows too.)

The account owner has tweeted a couple of times that they are grieving and wish they hadn't been linked to Metafilter right now.
