When we were homesteading in Vermont we sent away for our first box of chicks. It appeared in the town's very small (4x6') post office. My wife and I picked it up with our children, and the kids were fascinated by the sounds emitted by the box.
"It's a peeping package!" shouted my little boy, and I've never forgotten it.

Any idea why they're leaving the chicks in the with the eggs?

They move them out periodically to a box of straw with a heat lamp and/or a hen - not sure which this time. Two have been taken out so far.

I cried when Petunia wasn't able to lift her head there for a while after hatching.
WAY TO RALLY, PETUNIA!!!

It's good for them to dry out before they leave the brooder box. It's nice and warm and chick-friendly in there. They get moved out when they're dry and a bit more stable on their feet. Also, the chicks running around and peeping stimulates the chicks still in the eggs and seems to motivate them to come out! (Source: many years of watching Chickam.)

And my brooder box, I meant incubator, whoops. Brooder box is where they go after the incubator.

Oh hey, this gives me an excuse to talk about my 4 brand-new chicks. 3 of them are currently little balls of floof: The smallest one's a speckled Sussex and is mostly just soft grey down, then there's an all black (even the feet and beak) Ayam Cemani, and the third is an Easter Egger, she has a very obvious brown\black\grey pattern to her down. The fourth chick however really stands out. She's solid yellow, and while she's only a little older than the youngest, she is already over twice the size of all the others, we're not really sure what breed she is because the breeder gives a discount for chicks that might be a mix of two breeds. So we've got these 3 little dark colored fluff balls, and one LARGE YELLOW CHICK.
They all get along. At this stage chicken friendship looks something like this:
Very small chick: I'm cold I'm going to sleep next to you.
Very large chick: I'm gonna use you as a pillow now.

This is delightful. For a slightly more in-the-wild experience, the University of Sheffield has a webcam set up for the mated pair of peregrine falcons that live on its campus. There are currently four eggs in the nest, and they should be hatching within weeks. Stay tuned.
Small disclaimer: this isn't my web page, but I'm partly responsible for editing it and keeping the video streaming going. It's one of the more fun parts of my job.
