We are Guardians

After 131 years, starting in 2022, the Cleveland baseball team will be called the Cleveland Guardians.
The name refers to the monumental art deco statues by sculptor Henry Hering and architect Frank Walker that flank the 1932 Hope Memorial (nee Lorain-Carnegie) Bridge over the Cuyahoga River. The name change follows the long-overdue elimination of the team's mascot, Chief Wahoo, in 2018. Other names considered were the Spiders (a predecessor club from 1887–1899), the Rockers (an obvious reference, and obviously confusing), and the Municipals (after the team's former stadium). The launch video features Great Lakes Theater Festival star Thomas Hanks and Akron's own The Black Keys. The much-dreaded fan reaction has been mildly positive so far. On the other hand, in case you were wondering, the Former Guy is predictably outraged. Finally, no merch available yet, but the fans are already on it.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Heya, this would be great as a comment added to the existing recent post about the name change. -- cortex
