Loving lies

A heartbreaking, sobering, and compelling read.
Stephen Glass, the most notorious fraud in journalism, decided he would live by one simple rule: Always tell the truth. Then he broke that rule.

I think you can only read the article if you give them an email address. It is an interesting, heartbreaking read, for sure, and also for sure the demonization of Stephen Glass has gone on for far too long. He did lie and invent and he did scam readers but The New Republic gave him a very long leash and was more than remiss in their fact-checking. I mean, a shrine to Alan Greenspan? It seemed chuckle-worthy at the time, and vaguely plausible, but oh-so-easy to actually check. The best line in this piece is about how the couple moved to LA where no one cared about what Glass had done "at a magazine they'd never heard of" (o snap!).

Stephen Glass previously on Metafilter from 21 years ago minus one day. Most of the links don't work, but the Forbes articles are still there.

You can read the article by giving them a fake email address. Man I hate websites like this. It's a sad story about his wife's illness and how she and he handled it, including hiding the truth from friends.
